Dylan paused for a moment before saying, “It’s me.”
Rebecca frowned. “Who is this?”
He cleared his throat and gave his name. “Dylan.”
Rebecca was caught off guard for a second. It was only the second time she’d spoken to him, and she hadn’t recognized his voice right away. Her tone was flat. “Is there something you need?”
Dylan was silent for a moment, then spoke slowly. “I heard about what happened with my family today. They gave you a hard time, didn’t they?”
Rebecca let out a cold laugh. “Mr. Austin, you know your family better than anyone. Do you really need to ask if they made things difficult for me?”
Dylan’s brow furrowed. “No matter what happened, I won’t let it happen again.”
Rebecca’s voice remained indifferent. “Let’s hope so. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”
Dylan frowned again. Was he really hearing impatience in her voice?
Did she really dislike hearing from him that much?
He cleared his throat once more and continued, “The reason I called is to tell you—no matter what my family says, I’m not having a child with you.”
His tone was a little stiff. He meant to reassure her, to tell her not to let his family’s pressure get to her and to just stand her ground. But somehow, when the words came out, it sounded more like a command.
Rebecca’s frown deepened. “Good. I don’t have any intention of having a child with you either. You didn’t need to call to tell me that.”
With a sharp beep, Rebecca hung up.
Dylan’s face darkened. What the hell?
Did she really just hang up on him?
Dennis nodded quickly. “Absolutely, sir. For example, you could say, ‘Rebecca, I’m really sorry about today. It must’ve been tough for you.’ Then you work together to figure out what to do next.”
Dylan sounded exasperated. “So what, I’m supposed to pamper her all the time?”
Dennis thought to himself, Isn’t that what husbands are supposed to do? But seeing Dylan’s expression, he quickly changed tack. “Not pamper exactly, sir. Just…think about your words and how you say them. Let her know you mean it and that you care.”
Dylan looked even more confused. “Why should I bother making her feel cared for? I don’t even like her.”
Dennis was speechless.
Dylan waved a hand dismissively. “Alright, that’s enough. You can go.”
Dennis couldn’t have left the office faster if he’d tried.
