The Contract Said No Strings Attached (Charlotte) novel Chapter 99

Dylan sat alone, staring at the darkened screen long after the call ended. His mind was restless, thoughts churning without relief.

Meanwhile, on the other end, Rebecca let out a deep sigh as she hung up the phone. She slumped back into her seat, muttering to herself, “Typical Dylan—always showing up after the fact.”

He hadn’t bothered to help when the Austins were giving her a hard time; now he wanted to offer some half-hearted words of comfort? Please. It’s not like she was desperate to have children with him anyway.

But then, didn’t her mother say once that Dylan was infertile? Did the Austins have any idea about that?

Rebecca frowned, confusion clouding her thoughts. Was Dylan hiding the truth on purpose? Or was his family in the dark? Maybe her mother had gotten it wrong altogether.

She racked her brain, turning over every possibility, but no answer made sense. The more she thought, the more her head ached.

Eventually, she shook her head in irritation. Enough—whatever was going on with the Austins was their problem, not hers.

She couldn’t care less whether the Austins had grandchildren or not. As long as those elders kept their distance and didn’t bother her, she’d count her blessings.

Before long, the car rolled to a stop at Sunset Villa Estates.

Rebecca stepped out.

The moment she appeared, the butler, Jack, and the housekeeper, Emma, both stared in astonishment.

Emma, not quite sure who she was looking at, hesitated. “Um… and you are…?”

Ethan sprang forward with his hands on his hips and a proud grin. “Obviously she’s my mom! Emma, maybe you need to get your eyes checked.”

With that, all four kids dashed toward their mother.

Noah, ever the gentle one, took Rebecca’s hand. “Mom, you’re home.”

Emma pouted, unconvinced. “I don’t buy it. She’s definitely wearing foundation.”

Rebecca overheard and walked over, smiling.

Emma instantly tensed, bracing herself for a scolding.

But Rebecca just patted her shoulder with a light laugh. “Emma, even if I am wearing a little makeup, that just means I’ve got a good canvas to work with, doesn’t it?”

Emma scratched her head sheepishly. “Madam, I didn’t mean anything by it—I was just surprised. You really look different today. So beautiful.”

Rebecca grinned. “Relax, Emma. Don’t be so nervous. Otherwise, anyone would think I’m some sort of monster the way you’re acting!”

Emma waved her hands frantically, her face flushing with embarrassment. “Oh, no, Madam! Not at all! You’re like a fairy to me—being able to work for you is the luckiest thing that’s ever happened to me.”
