The Contract Said No Strings Attached (Charlotte) novel Chapter 97

Rebecca stepped out of the Austins’ old manor and drew a deep breath, trying to steady herself.

Had she known the Austins would be like this, she never would have come. It was painfully clear they didn’t see her as anything more than a vessel for their next heir.

She’d never imagined that marrying into the Austin family would land her in such a hopeless situation.

She was just about to get into her car when one of Mr. Hugh Austin’s household staff hurried after her. The old butler, face etched with concern, spoke in a gentle tone. “Mrs. Austin, please don’t take it to heart. Mrs. Austin was just anxious and spoke a bit harshly. The old master still values you deeply. I hope you’ll try to understand.”

Rebecca let out a cold laugh. “Understand? Has anyone ever thought about how I feel? To them, I’m nothing but a baby machine.”

The butler rushed to explain, “You’ve misunderstood, ma’am. The Austins simply wish for the family to thrive. No one meant to make things difficult for you.”

Rebecca pressed on, her voice sharp. “If that’s true, why can’t even one of them come out and apologize themselves? Why send you, of all people, to smooth things over?”

The butler hesitated, caught off guard by her bluntness, unable to answer.

Expect the Austins themselves to apologize? That was unthinkable.

Rebecca scoffed, unsurprised by their lack of sincerity. “Save it. There’s no need to say more. I’m leaving. Please tell Mr. Austin that if I decide not to have this child, then no one can force me.”

With that, she got into her car, slammed the door, and the luxury sedan sped away in a cloud of dust.

The butler watched the car disappear and let out a sigh.

“Seems this young lady has a mind of her own. Not so easy to push around, after all.”

In the Austin Group’s executive office, Dylan was taken aback when he heard what had happened. “She really said that?”

Dennis nodded. “She did. Mrs. Austin put the old master and madam in their place, left them speechless. She was pretty impressive.”

“Send it to me.” Dylan’s words were clipped, as ever.

Dennis had no idea what the boss had in mind, but obediently forwarded every number and address he had for Rebecca.

Honestly, what a strange couple—the husband was the CEO, yet he didn’t even have his wife’s phone number.

Dylan glanced at the information but didn’t move right away. He tapped his fingers lightly on the desk, deep in thought.

Dennis stood by, barely daring to breathe, silently trying to guess what was on the boss’s mind.

After a long moment, Dylan finally picked up his phone and dialed Rebecca’s number.

It rang for ages. Just when Dylan thought she wouldn’t pick up, Rebecca’s cool voice came through the receiver. “Hello?”
