After finishing her words, Rebecca turned on her heel and strode out of the living room, leaving behind only the image of her confident, unbothered retreat.
Mrs. Austin was shaking with rage at Rebecca’s audacity. “The nerve of that girl! Who does she think she is, lecturing me? Unbelievable. Rebecca, I’m warning you—don’t come crying when you regret this!”
Rebecca ignored Mrs. Austin’s hysterics, walking away without so much as a backwards glance.
Mr. Hugh Austin’s face was thunderous. He was frustrated by Rebecca’s stubbornness, but also deeply exasperated by his wife’s relentless aggression.
Jacob looked anxious, uncertain how to defuse this escalating conflict.
Mrs. Austin, still fuming, kept muttering under her breath, “Look at her, strutting around like we can’t live without her in this family…”
Suddenly, Mr. Austin snapped, his voice booming across the room. “Enough! Not another word!”
Startled, Mrs. Austin flinched as her husband’s anger filled the air. “You happy now?” he demanded, glaring at her. “This is the mess you made—so you clean it up yourself.”
With that, he stalked out, his heavy, deliberate footsteps radiating disappointment with every step.
Mrs. Austin gritted her teeth, barely whispering, “Fine. I’ll handle it myself. As if there aren’t other women in the world who could give Dylan a son…”
Jacob fell silent for a moment before replying, “Let’s wait for Dylan to come home. Maybe once everyone’s calmed down, we can talk things through and reach an understanding. There’s still a chance to fix this, but not if we keep making things worse.”
Mrs. Austin let out a bitter laugh. “Wait for Dylan? As if he’d take our side. Stubborn as a mule—that boy never listens to anyone. Forget it. I can’t count on either of you. I’ll just handle it myself.”
Jacob looked at her, helpless in the face of her stubbornness. “Just don’t go off the rails, or you’ll tear this family apart for good.”
Mrs. Austin ignored him, lost in her own scheming.
Jacob could only watch her with growing worry, muttering to himself, “Fine. Do whatever you want. I give up…”
