Emily finally calmed down and stopped complaining about the pain at the top of her thigh.
Still, she wasn’t ready to let things end there. Her eyes darted slyly as she tried again, “Dr. Thomson, is there anything I should watch out for once I go home? Could you give me your contact details? Just in case I have any questions, I could reach out to you directly.”
William’s face remained impassive as he replied, “All of my instructions will be written down for you. Just follow them carefully. The hospital has a dedicated helpline—if you need anything, call that number.”
He gathered the patient files on his desk and handed them to her.
Emily pouted, disappointment written all over her face. She looked like she wanted to say more.
Just then, William’s phone rang sharply. He answered, and his expression turned grave. “Understood. I’ll be right there.”
“What’s wrong, William?” Rebecca asked, concern in her voice.
“There’s an emergency case in the ER. I have to take a look,” he said, already rising from his chair.
Rebecca nodded. “Go on, William. Saving lives comes first.”
William gave a quick nod, turning to Rebecca before he left. “I can’t walk you out, I’m afraid. Take care on your way home.”
Rebecca nodded again.
With that, William hurried out. The hem of his white coat fluttered as the door swung shut behind him.
As soon as he was gone, Emily dropped her act. She watched his retreating figure and thought to herself, “Dr. Thomson, you’re not escaping me that easily.”
Infuriated, Emily stamped her foot. “You’re just a lousy intern—why are you always picking on me?”
Isabella glanced down at her feet with a smirk. “Oh? I thought your leg was hurting. Doesn’t look like it bothers you much if you can stomp like that.”
Emily’s eyes darted, her voice tense. “It hurts! Of course it hurts. Who said it didn’t?”
Isabella stepped closer, crowding Emily with a sly smile. “Really? I think you’re just faking it, trying to use your little injury to get Dr. Thomson’s attention. You think the rest of us can’t see right through you?”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears, her voice trembling on the edge of a sob. “You… you’re just being mean! Just wait—I’m going to report you! Let’s see how long you last in this hospital!”
Turning to Crystal, Emily clung to her arm and pleaded, “Crystal, doesn’t your family have connections? Talk to your William—ask the chief to get her fired!”
