At that moment, Emma was busy cleaning.
Hearing Crystal’s sharp voice, and especially seeing the way she spoke so rudely to Jack, Emma’s temper flared instantly.
She put down her cleaning supplies and strode over. “What’s your problem? Who do you think you are, making a scene here?”
Crystal set her phone aside and looked Emma up and down, a flash of annoyance and surprise in her eyes. “Excuse me? And who are you to talk to me like that?”
Emma gave a cold snort. “Who am I? I’m the housemaid, Emma. And you—aren’t you just the Thomsons’ adopted daughter? Who are you putting on airs for?”
Realizing Emma was just a maid, Crystal let out a mocking laugh.
She crossed her arms and stepped closer, her gaze icy. “What did you just say? I dare you to say it again.”
Emma refused to back down. “And what if I do? I said you’re nothing but an adopted daughter, barging in here and making a scene. Do you even know where you are? This isn’t your house to order people around. I suggest you leave now—you’re not welcome here.”
Emma kept hammering home the word “adopted,” and Crystal’s fists clenched in fury.
“So what if I’m adopted? I’m still part of the Thomsons, aren’t I? And you—a lowly servant—what gives you the right to speak to me like this? You think you can tell me to leave?”
Emma rolled her eyes and replied mercilessly, “Part of the Thomsons? Please. You’re just here on someone else’s charity. Even Rebecca—Mr. Austin doesn’t think much of her, let alone you. And anyway, I work for Mr. Austin, not the Thomsons, so I can say whatever I please.”
“You—”
Emma cut her off. “You think you can compare yourself to Rebecca? She’s prettier and has more grace than you ever will. Honestly, I don’t even like Rebecca, but next to her, you’re not even worth a strand of her hair. You’re just a jealous little nobody.”
To Emma’s shock, Jack was actually trying to help Crystal. She shoved him aside and snapped, “Jack, what are you so afraid of? You’ve been the head butler of Sunset Villa Estates for years. Why should you let her walk all over you? If you’re scared, then stay out of this. I, for one, can’t stand to see this little brat throwing tantrums in here.”
Jack broke out in a cold sweat.
He knew Emma’s temper was notoriously fiery. Why did the Thomsons’ adopted daughter have to cross paths with Emma, of all people?
No, he corrected himself, why did he have to get caught up between them?
Unable to stop the two, Jack watched helplessly as Emma and Crystal started to scuffle.
“Emma, please, calm down! Ms. Thomson is still the Thomsons’ adopted daughter. We can’t afford to offend her. If the Thomsons come down on us for this, we’ll all be in trouble!” Jack pleaded desperately.
