Dylan nodded gravely. “Don’t worry, William. I’ll take care of it.” With that, he turned and walked away.
Rebecca hurried to catch up, glancing back at William. “Doctor, we’ll be heading off now.”
William watched their retreating figures, his mind swirling with suspicion.
The more he thought about it, the stranger it seemed—Becky’s behavior today had been downright odd.
Meanwhile, Rebecca trailed behind Dylan, anxious and uneasy, racking her brain for a way to explain things to William.
Out of nowhere, Dylan spoke. “You and that doctor seem pretty close, huh?”
Rebecca jumped, startled. “W-What? No, of course not. Where’d you get that idea?”
Dylan let out a cold laugh. “If you’re not close, why were you batting your eyelashes at him the whole time?”
“Batting my eyelashes?” Rebecca’s eyes widened in disbelief. What on earth was he talking about? She couldn’t remember so much as glancing at William that way!
Still, she had to admit—Dylan’s perceptiveness was almost unsettling.
She opened her mouth to explain, but before she could, Dylan cut her off. “Don’t get any funny ideas. He’s not someone you can mess with. And don’t forget what happened to Linda—unless you want to end up like she did.”
He didn’t wait for a response, just strode away, leaving Rebecca standing there, face flushed with anger.
She clenched her fists, teeth grinding. If she could, she’d march over and knock some sense into that twisted, paranoid jerk. How dare he treat her like some scheming flirt?
Just then, her phone buzzed.
Rebecca forced herself to calm down and pulled it out.
Tucking her phone away, she looked up at Dylan, who was still walking ahead. A swirl of complicated emotions churned inside her.
As if sensing her gaze, Dylan stopped and turned around. “What is it?”
“Nothing, sir. I’ll go pay your bill,” Rebecca said quickly.
He nodded and said nothing more.
Rebecca broke into a jog toward the billing counter.
Once she’d sorted everything out, she walked Dylan to the hospital entrance. By now, every part of her felt exhausted, but she forced herself to stay alert.
She glanced at the time. “Sir, it’s the end of my shift. May I head home now?”
