The Contract Said No Strings Attached (Charlotte) novel Chapter 141

Panic fluttered in Rebecca’s chest. She never imagined she’d run into Dylan here, of all places. Trying to steady herself in the face of his interrogation, she managed a calm tone. “Of course I remember you. Last time, when my son popped your tire, we met. I paid you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the trouble.”

Dylan let out a cold laugh. “Is that so? You have quite the memory.”

She dropped her gaze, unable to meet his eyes. Trouble, she thought anxiously. No matter how hard she tried to avoid him, here she was—right in the offices of the Frost Group, and still she hadn’t managed to escape Dylan.

At least, from the looks of it, her husband hadn’t recognized her.

Seeing how nervous she looked, Dylan’s suspicion only deepened. “Why exactly did you come to work at the Frost Group? What’s your real motive?”

Rebecca blinked, genuinely confused. “Sir, I’m just an employee. What kind of motive could I possibly have?”

God forbid he thought she was here to start some office romance.

Dylan scoffed. “A woman who can hand over two hundred and fifty grand just like that, working an ordinary job? Doesn’t seem like you’re strapped for cash. Or maybe you’re hoping to snag an even bigger fish while you’re here?”

After all, two hundred and fifty thousand was pocket change for a guy like Jonas. There wasn’t a woman alive who wouldn’t want to climb a little higher.

Rebecca was even more bewildered. “Fishing? What fish? Sir, I really just want to work here. That’s all.”

Dylan studied her for a moment, then said, icy and clipped, “It better be. Just do your job and don’t try any tricks.”

She nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.”

With that, Rebecca turned to make her escape.

She had almost reached the door when Dylan called out, “Wait.”

She spun back, startled. “Sir? Is there something else?”

Dylan was silent for a moment before he finally said, “I’ll let it go this time. But if it happens again, you’re out.”

Rebecca nodded emphatically. “Yes, sir. It won’t happen again.”

She turned to leave.

But once more, Dylan stopped her. “Wait. Take these pastries with you. I don’t want to see them.”

Suppressing a sigh, Rebecca picked up the box. “Of course, sir.”

Once she’d finally left the CEO’s office, Rebecca let out a long breath.

That man was impossible. The thought of someone like him becoming her children’s stepfather? She couldn’t help but feel more than a little reluctant.
