With both witnesses and evidence in hand, Jack wasted no time and dialed the number.
But Dylan’s phone wouldn’t connect. With no other choice, Jack reported the matter to Dennis instead.
Dennis was Mr. Austin’s right hand. After hearing Jack’s account, he replied, “Alright, I’ll pass this on to Mr. Austin.”
Then he hung up.
But Dennis got swept up in work and promptly forgot all about it.
Jack waited for a long time but never heard back.
Emma, growing impatient, came looking for him. When she learned the truth, she was absolutely furious. “Unbelievable! Those four little monsters—how dare they play their tricks on me of all people! Jack, did you tell Mr. Austin about this?”
Jack nodded. “I told Dennis. He’s supposed to pass it along.”
“And what if Dennis forgets?” Emma pressed, worry clouding her face.
Jack frowned, uncertain. “He probably won’t… I mean, he shouldn’t…”
Emma’s eyes lit up with an idea. “Jack, why don’t you call those four troublemakers into the study and give them a good talking-to? Kids like that only straighten up after a proper scolding.”
Jack’s mouth twitched, clearly uneasy. “I… I don’t know if that’s a good idea…”
Emma’s eyes narrowed, her annoyance flaring. “Jack, you didn’t seem to have any doubts when you shared my bed, did you?”
Jack turned pale, completely flustered. “Keep your voice down! Someone might hear…”
“Oh, so you weren’t afraid of being caught then, but now you are? I’m warning you—if you don’t stand up for me today, I’ll tell everyone about us!”
Noah stepped forward. “It was my idea.”
Jack fixed him with a stern look. “Your idea, was it?”
Noah nodded, completely unrepentant. “That’s right. It was me.”
Jack’s brows drew together, surprised by Noah’s boldness. “So you’re the ringleader, huh? That means you’ll be taking most of the heat today!”
He looked at all of them, exasperated. “You kids are getting worse by the day. If I don’t teach you a lesson now, who knows what you’ll get up to next!”
Noah just smirked, a glint of defiance in his eyes. “So what are you going to do about it?”
Jack straightened, puffing up with authority. “Mr. Austin isn’t home, and he left me in charge. That means it’s my responsibility to set you right.” With that, he pulled out his old feather duster from behind his back.
