Jonas nodded eagerly. "Yes, I've been looking for you for a long time. You have no idea, Dylan sent me abroad just to keep me from seeing you..."
Rebecca frowned.
Really?
Dylan would do something like that?
But why would Dylan want to keep Jonas away from her?
The thought of Dylan made Jonas fume, and he couldn't help but vent his frustrations. "I came back to the company and you were gone. It was Dylan who got rid of you. It makes me so mad."
As he spoke, Jonas began to sound genuinely upset. "I worked my butt off overseas just to get back sooner. I haven't stopped since I returned. I'm practically the employee of the year."
Jonas grew more agitated. "In the end, it all comes down to my cousin Dylan being too ruthless. He's not even human!"
Rebecca's lips twitched. "Is... is that so?"
Jonas continued to bad-mouth Dylan. "That's right. My cousin is the worst person in the world. You'd be better off staying away from him."
After a moment, he asked, "By the way, young lady, what are you doing here?"
His tone immediately softened as he looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca replied, "I came with Mr. Austin for Mr. Hugh Austin's birthday party."
Jonas frowned. "Oh, I see."
So Dylan was being a hypocrite. He wouldn't let Jonas pursue happiness, but he had no problem bringing his own secretary to a family event.
Hmph. From this day forward, he and Dylan were rivals in love.
Her voice wasn't loud, but its sharp, critical tone was unmistakable in the quiet study.
In her eyes, Rebecca was completely unworthy of the Austin family, let alone the title of its young mistress. Seeing her being so friendly with Jonas only confirmed her belief that Rebecca was a woman of loose morals who would bring shame upon their family.
At the sound of her voice, Dylan glanced down and saw Jonas and Rebecca as well.
Jonas had brought back some food, and the two of them were chatting and eating. Jonas was gesturing animatedly, saying something that made Rebecca burst out laughing, her eyes curving into crescents. She looked incredibly happy.
Dylan couldn't help but frown.
He knew Jonas had a crush on Rebecca and had hoped that sending him away would reduce their contact. He never expected Jonas to find an opportunity so quickly.
Still, Dylan offered an explanation. "He probably doesn't know Rebecca is Mrs. Austin yet."
Mrs. Austin looked at him, aghast. "What? Is he blind or just stupid? How could he not know that's his sister-in-law?"
