Samuel took a moment to think before he finally said, “If you’re just friends with her, that’s fine, but remember—you can never really know what’s in someone’s heart. Even with friends, don’t get too close too fast. I’ll look into her background for you. If she checks out and has no ulterior motives, then you can decide if you still want to spend time with her.”

He was doing all of this for one simple reason: he didn’t want Becky to get hurt.

Rebecca fell silent after hearing Samuel’s words.

Was Samuel really that worried she’d make the wrong kind of friend? Was he trying to play gatekeeper in her life?

She waved him off. “I get it, Samuel. Drive safe.”

Samuel nodded. “Alright. I’m heading out. If anything comes up, call me.”

With that, he told the driver to pull away.

Rebecca watched the car disappear into the distance and let out a soft sigh.

She’d barely taken a step toward the house when her phone buzzed. It was a message from Dylan.

“Rebecca, I warned you to be careful, but now everyone knows. Are you planning on making me clean up your mess every single time?”

He sounded angry, or at least that’s how it came across.

Rebecca stared at the message, completely bewildered. She had no idea what he was talking about.

What on earth was Dylan getting at?

And this wasn’t the first time—his last message had been just as cryptic and accusatory.

After a moment of heavy silence, Dylan said, “Rebecca, I heard you’ve been spending a lot of time with some strange man lately. Is that true?”

Rebecca frowned, genuinely confused. “Dylan, who told you that? I haven’t been getting close to any strange men.”

Dylan let out a quiet, derisive laugh. “The whole neighborhood knows about your affair now. Did you really think you could keep it from me?”
