Rebecca hesitated. What if it was something important from work? Missing the call could be a problem.
In the end, she decided it was better to answer and find out.
But as soon as she picked up, a young woman’s voice came through. “Mr. Austin…”
Rebecca paused. The voice sounded oddly familiar.
Garcia?
Recognizing Garcia’s voice, Rebecca cleared her throat and asked, “Is there something you need?”
On the other end, Garcia froze.
Why is a woman answering?
“Who are you? Why do you have his phone? Where’s Dylan? I need to speak to him!” Garcia’s tone sharpened with irritation.
Well, well—no more ‘Mr. Austin,’ just ‘Dylan’ now.
Rebecca glanced at Dylan, fast asleep beside her, and arched an eyebrow. “He’s already gone to bed. Why are you calling my husband in the middle of the night? What’s so urgent?”
Garcia was struck speechless.
Husband?
“Are you… Rebecca?” she stammered, clearly taken aback.
Wasn’t it common knowledge that Rebecca and Dylan didn’t get along? What were they doing together this late… sleeping?
Rebecca kept her composure. “That’s right. And you are?”
Faced with the wife, Garcia suddenly lost her confidence. “I… I’m Mr. Austin’s secretary. He wasn’t at the office, so I called to check if he was alright.”
She’d finally managed to get his phone number from Mrs. Austin, called with high hopes—only for Rebecca to answer.
It was infuriating.
Mrs. Austin listened to Garcia’s complaints, a wave of anxiety washing over her.
She’d always thought Garcia was the perfect match for Dylan, but now—this happened.
She quickly tried to reassure Garcia. “Garcia, don’t get worked up. This might just be a misunderstanding. Dylan isn’t the type to act impulsively… Maybe it’s not what it looks like.”
But Garcia wasn’t having it. She felt utterly wronged. “Ma’am, how could it be a misunderstanding? They’re sleeping together. I don’t stand a chance anymore!”
