“Like this—you want to keep the pressure even. Not too rough, not too gentle.” Samuel demonstrated as he spoke, his tone calm and patient.
Joyce watched his movements intently. Sunlight spilled over his shoulders, outlining his tall, athletic frame. There was something magnetic about his deep, mellow voice; it seemed to draw her in, making it impossible not to be completely absorbed.
She realized her heart was beating a little faster.
“Got it?” Samuel finished the demonstration, glancing down at Joyce with a soft, expectant look.
Snapping back to reality, Joyce nodded quickly. “I think so, thank you.”
Samuel handed the fishing rod back to her. “You’re welcome. Give it a try yourself.”
With that, he turned and walked a short distance away.
Joyce fixed her gaze on the shimmering water, hoping it would hide her flustered nerves and the uncertainty she felt.
Rebecca strolled over, grinning. “Well? Not bad, right? Samuel’s a good teacher.”
Joyce nodded, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “Yeah, he’s really impressive.”
Rebecca’s pride was unmistakable. “Samuel’s actually a bit of a fishing pro. And it’s not just fishing—he’s great at a lot of things.”
Joyce’s curiosity was piqued. “Oh? Like what?”
Rebecca raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying the chance to brag a little. “Besides fishing, he boxes and does mixed martial arts. He’s even won a bunch of awards.”
Joyce nodded, understanding. She knew how much children could transform someone—their innocence and honesty had a way of reaching the gentlest parts of a person’s heart.
“Those four must mean the world to him,” Joyce said.
“They do,” Rebecca replied, her eyes softening. “But the kids are lucky, too. Samuel’s not just there for them—he’s taught them so much. If anyone messes with those kids, Samuel’s the first to stand up for them.”
Joyce felt her throat tighten with emotion. “They really are lucky…”
The two women fell quiet for a moment, sharing a gentle silence.
Then Rebecca chuckled, as if remembering something. “Don’t let his gentle side fool you, though. Sometimes those four drive Samuel absolutely crazy.”
