Her coworkers watched her, their eyes full of envy.
Everyone remembered what happened last time—Linda had brought the CEO an afternoon snack and ended up being kicked out of the company. Yet here was Raina, and the boss had actually accepted her homemade cookies.
Did this mean the CEO felt differently about Raina?
But on second thought, that seemed impossible. Raina was already married and had a son. The CEO had money and looks; why would he be interested in a married woman?
Maybe he just really wanted those cookies...
Only Rebecca shook her head helplessly. After a moment’s hesitation, she picked up the remaining cookies and headed to Dylan’s office.
Arriving at the CEO’s door, she knocked lightly.
“Come in,” Dylan’s voice called from inside.
Rebecca pushed the door open and stepped in. She saw Dylan already seated behind his desk, laptop open.
“Sir, these are the cookies,” she said, setting the plate on his desk. She poured a glass of milk and added, “If they’re a little dry, you can dip them in the milk.”
Dylan looked up at her. “Thank you.”
His voice was calm, but the simple courtesy surprised Rebecca.
She smiled. “You’re welcome. I’ll leave you to it.”
Dylan waved her off with one hand, the other already reaching for his phone, looking busy as ever.
Relieved, Rebecca turned to leave, her steps light as she walked toward the door.
But she’d barely taken two steps when her phone buzzed loudly from her pocket, the ringtone echoing through the office.
Worried she was disturbing him, Rebecca turned back, apologizing quickly, “Sorry about that, sir.”
She glanced at the screen—and froze.
Dylan?
“I… I didn’t hear it just now. Is something wrong?” she replied, forcing herself to sound calm.
Dylan’s voice was measured. “I promised your grandfather I’d visit him with you. When are you free? Let’s set a time.”
What?
Together?
Rebecca was stunned. “There’s… really no need for that.”
She hadn’t expected Dylan to suggest such a thing.
Dylan’s tone cooled. “He’s your grandfather.”
If he was willing, why was she, his actual granddaughter, so reluctant?
Rebecca hurried to explain, “It’s just… I don’t think it’s necessary because he’s doing much better. He’ll be out of the hospital soon. Us visiting together would be a bit over the top, wouldn’t it?”
