The Contract Said No Strings Attached (Charlotte) novel Chapter 270

Rebecca’s heart clenched with worry as she hurried forward. “William, what’s wrong?” she asked anxiously.

Mrs. Thomson came over too, concern etched on her face. “What happened, dear?”

George was even more urgent. “How’s Grandpa? Did you get any answers from the doctors?”

Everyone stood around William, their eyes fixed on him, waiting for his response.

William looked down at his grandfather lying motionless in the hospital bed. His throat tightened, and for a moment he couldn’t speak. But he forced himself to stay calm, deciding not to tell the whole truth just yet.

If he told them about Grandpa’s real condition now, it would only deepen their fear and pain. He resolved to keep it to himself until he could figure out a better way forward.

“The results are back. Grandpa’s just a bit worked up—doctor says he needs some peace and quiet to recover,” William said, his voice steady and composed, betraying nothing.

Relief swept through the room.

The tension that had gripped everyone began to ease. As long as Grandpa wasn’t in any immediate danger, that was enough for now.

Mrs. Thomson managed a grateful smile. “Thank goodness. As long as he’s okay, that’s all that matters.”

George nodded in agreement. “Exactly. Once he wakes up, we’ll bring him home and make sure he gets plenty of rest.”

But secrets have a way of coming to light.

The moment William stepped out of the hospital room, he pulled out his phone and sent messages to Matthew, Samuel, and Michael, telling his brothers the truth about Grandpa’s condition.

He knew he couldn’t handle this alone. If they all worked together, maybe they could find a way to help.

After sending the messages, William stood alone in the hallway, the weight of worry still pressing down on him.

……

Upstairs, in the executive office, Dylan was busy sorting through paperwork.

Dylan didn’t usually concern himself with the Thomsons, but he forced himself to be patient. “Go on.”

“Mr. Austin, Mr. Thomson’s been hospitalized.”

Dylan’s frown deepened. “Hospitalized? What happened?”

“Apparently he got too upset—collapsed from the stress,” Dennis said, hesitating before continuing, “Mr. Austin, since you’re the Thomsons’ son-in-law, at least in name, perhaps you should pay a visit…”

Dylan was silent for a moment. This was serious. The truth was, he’d always kept the Thomsons at arm’s length, but he couldn’t ignore this completely.

After thinking it over, he said, “Alright. Put something together—flowers, some gifts—and pick me up later.”

“Yes, Mr. Austin.”

Dennis wasted no time. He gathered a tasteful bouquet and a few thoughtful presents, then got in the car and headed out to collect Dylan for their visit to the hospital.
