Emily swallowed hard, her eyes fixed nervously on Crystal’s every move.
Fear twisted in her chest—she was terrified Crystal might turn on her.
As Crystal turned to leave, Emily finally found the courage to call out.
“Wait, Crystal.” Her voice trembled.
Crystal paused, glancing back at Emily with a puzzled look. “What is it? Is there something else?”
Emily took a shaky breath and forced herself to speak. “I... I don’t want revenge anymore. Honestly, I probably deserved that beating—I messed things up, and if Rebecca hit me, well, maybe I brought it on myself. Since we have no proof, let’s just drop it.”
Emily’s heart pounded as she spoke, fear clouding her thoughts.
Now that she knew Crystal was the one who’d actually attacked her, she realized pressing further might only put her in more danger.
Better to swallow her humiliation quietly than risk making things worse.
Crystal frowned, clearly baffled by Emily’s sudden change of heart. “Why? Rebecca had someone beat you up, and you’re just going to let it go?”
Is she seriously this stupid? Has she been knocked senseless?
Emily scrambled for an excuse, trying to convince Crystal. “Think about it, Crystal. We haven’t found any real evidence. Even if we keep looking, there’s no guarantee we’ll succeed. And Rebecca isn’t exactly easy to mess with—if we push her too far, she might just come after us instead. I’m already hurt enough… why bring more trouble on myself?”
Crystal fell silent for a moment, considering her words.
Finally, she shrugged. “Do what you want. It’s not like I’m the one who got beat up.”
In truth, Crystal had just wanted to ruin Rebecca’s reputation, to make her life miserable.
Without evidence, it simply wasn’t worth the effort.
Emily caught the warning in Crystal’s tone and silently thanked her lucky stars she’d realized the danger in time.
If she’d kept pushing, who knew what might’ve happened.
Isabella nodded. “Yeah. I thought she’d milk her hospital stay for months, especially with the way she’s been chasing after Dr. Thomson. But now she’s checking out early? That’s not like her at all.”
Rebecca fell silent, lost in thought.
Had something happened to frighten Emily?
“Rebecca, do you think maybe Emily’s feeling guilty about something? Is that why she’s rushing out?” Isabella asked.
Rebecca replied coolly, “She’s definitely hiding something. But let’s not jump to conclusions. I’ll have someone keep an eye on her. With my people watching, she won’t be able to pull anything.”
Isabella agreed. “Good. Just be careful, okay? Keep an eye on both Emily and Crystal.”
Rebecca gave a quiet “I know.”
After hanging up, Rebecca sat in silence, piecing together the puzzle in her mind.
