Chapter 684
Naomi watched it all in silence.
Their respect for Cale felt absolute, yet the warmth they showed Lydia was just as clear. The couple seemed to belong to a world completely different from hers.
She was placed in the back seat of the first car with Lydia, while Daniel took the front passenger seat. Cale entered last and sat beside Lydia, instinctively positioning himself between his wife and the door.
“Are you all right?” Cale asked softly.
“I’m fine.” Lydia looked at him. “You’re the one who seems tense.”
“I’m just tired.”
“I hope Liu doesn’t start burying you in work right away. He should let you rest.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Cale clicked his tongue, though a faint smile touched his lips. He gently stroked the top of his wife’s head with quiet affection.
Naomi turned her face toward the window.
For some reason, watching that small gesture made something inside her chest feel strange. It was not envy, nor entirely sadness. Perhaps it was simply the ache of being far from something she had never truly possessed.
Hong Kong stretched before her in a blur of motion. Towering glass buildings, layered highways, busy harbors, giant glowing signs, and crowds of people moving with relentless purpose. Everything looked grand, vibrant, overwhelmingly alive.
“What do you think? Beautiful, isn’t it?” Lydia asked, breaking the silence.
“I don’t know. It’s my first time in this city. To me… it feels crowded,” Naomi replied softly.
“That’s true too.”
Naomi kept staring outside.
In her mind, Berlin surfaced like fragments of an old film. The cramped apartment, the bakery on the corner, the bus stop she passed every day, the endless side jobs, and the small life she had built with her own hands.
Could all of that really be left behind this easily?
At last, the car entered a private hillside district. Tall iron gates opened automatically, revealing an
ascending road lined with sprawling gardens and old trees. A stone fountain stood in the center of the vast grounds.
Naomi swallowed hard. “Is this your home?”

“A temporary one,” Lydia answered casually. “This isn’t our family’s main residence.”
Naomi turned sharply toward her. “There’s another house?”
“Several.”
She could not hide her shock.
So the two of them were not merely ordinary travelers in Berlin.
The car came to a stop in front of a modern-classical mansion with towering windows and a broad staircase leading to the main entrance. Several staff members were already lined up outside, waiting.
Daniel stepped out first and opened Naomi’s door. “Please watch your step, Miss.”
This time, Naomi did not protest when he helped her out. She was still far too weak for pride.
The moment the front doors opened, a grand hall welcomed them with gleaming marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and calm air scented with something soft and expensive. The staff bowed in unison.
“Welcome back, Sir.”
“Welcome home, Madam.”
Naomi stood stiffly, suddenly aware of how plain her clothes were, how small she seemed in a place this
magnificent.
Lydia touched her arm warmly. “Come in. Treat it like your own home.”
“Are you… sure?”
“Of course.” Lydia smiled softly.
The sound of a cane striking the floor echoed from the far end of the hall.
An elderly man with silver hair walked forward slowly yet upright, dressed in the immaculate uniform of a chief butler. His gaze was sharp, seasoned by years of seeing far too much.
He bowed first to Cale.
“Young Master.”
Then to Lydia.
“And congratulations on your marriage. I pray that Young Master and Madam Lydia will always receive blessings and protection from the gods.”
“Thank you, Mr. Sheng,” Lydia said warmly.
But the moment his eyes fell on Naomi, he stopped mid-step.
His grip tightened around the cane.
