“I just want to know,” Josh said one afternoon, “why do you always go out alone?”

Chris gave him a flat look. “It's nothing.”

“If it's nothing, why do you look like someone who's hiding something?” Josh narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

“Because I am hiding something and preparing something.”

Josh fell silent.

Chris smiled faintly. “But it's not for you.”

Josh pouted. “I know. It's for Naomi, isn't it?”

“Heh.” Chris put an arm around Josh and ruffled his beloved nephew's hair. “You don't like me getting married?”

Josh immediately brushed Chris's hand away from his head, then smoothed his hair back with an annoyed expression. “That's not it.”

“Then?”

Josh looked at his uncle for a few seconds. This time, there was no mischievous smile on his face. “I'm happy.”

That simple answer made Chris fall silent for a moment. “Really?”

“Yes.” Josh nodded. “I'm happy you're with Naomi.”

Chris leaned against the table behind him. “Why?”

“Because ever since she came, you seem different.”

Chris raised an eyebrow. “Different how?”

“More patient.”

“That's an insult,” Chris said, rolling his eyes in annoyance.

Josh chuckled. “And you smile more often.”

Chris did not answer immediately. He only lowered his head with a faint smile that was difficult to hide.

Josh continued, “I'm also glad Naomi joined the Miller family. She fits in with our family.”

Chris furrowed his brow deeply.

“You know, with this family, Naomi is more open too.” Josh shrugged. “With Grandma Riana. With Grandpa Nathan. With you.” He paused for a moment. “With me too.”

Chris laughed softly. “You've already accepted her as family?”

“From the beginning.”

A warmth slowly filled Chris's chest. He had known Josh since the boy was little. He had watched him grow, listened to his stories, and been there for various little moments that might have meant nothing to other people. That was why hearing Josh accept Naomi so easily meant far more than he could put into words.

“Oh, damn. Why did I end up with a nephew as annoying as you?”

They finally laughed together.

Josh cleared his throat briefly after managing to compose himself. “Once again, as long as it's for you, Uncle Chris. I want to see you happy, and I think having Naomi in your life will make you even happier.”

Those words left Chris silent. There was no joke after that. He simply looked at Josh, then pulled him into a brief hug. “Thank you.”

Josh gently patted Chris on the back. “But I still want to know what the gift for Naomi is.”

Chris immediately let him go. “Get out.”

Josh burst out laughing. “Now that's the Uncle Chris I know.”

He ran out of the room before Chris could chase him. Chris could only shake his head with a smile, but after Josh left, that smile did not disappear right away.

For the first time, he felt that he did not need to find something more expensive than the gifts from the Devereux family.

He only needed to give her something that truly came from him. Something that would make Naomi understand that from the beginning, Chris had never chosen her because of circumstances.

He chose her because Naomi was the person he wanted to take with him all the way to the end.
