“You took so long,” Chase complained.
Eli stood up and laughed. “I just finished class.”
Josh approached and took the book from Eli’s hand.
“Let’s go home.”
Eli frowned. “Why are you the one deciding?”
“Because you always lose track of time when you’re studying.”
“I’m not like that.”
Grace immediately laughed. “You are.”
Eli finally gave in and walked with them. Chase ran ahead, while Grace followed him. Josh walked beside Eli, occasionally glancing at her to make sure the girl’s steps were truly back to normal.
Ever since Eli had fainted, Althea had revoked her permission to stay in the dorm. The woman had become even more nagging, but also more affectionate. It was fine. Eli had never tried to insist on having things her way. After all, when she was sick, Althea had been the first person to come see her.
They had not walked very far when Chase suddenly stopped and turned around.
“Eli, let’s stop by the coffee shop first!”
“Why?”
“Naomi asked me to buy her some cookies.”
Grace nodded. “She said she wants the ones from that shop.”
“She doesn’t want any others,” Chase added with a serious expression, as if it were a very important matter.
Eli laughed. “Are the cookies there really that good?”
“That’s what Naomi said,” Grace replied.
“Then let’s buy them.”
No one objected. They eventually turned toward the coffee shop Naomi had mentioned. Chase walked ahead with Grace, while Eli and Josh were a few steps behind them.
The atmosphere that afternoon felt light.
Josh suddenly spoke. “Had enough of dating?”
Eli turned and laughed softly. “No.”
“Really?”
“I just happened to like the wrong person.”
Josh immediately laughed. “In the future, don’t let that happen again, Eli.”
His tone sounded like ordinary advice, but his eyes remained fixed on the girl beside him.
