Oscar slowly lifted his head. His breathing was ragged, his chest rising and falling unevenly.
“If you refuse,” Cale continued-his voice calm, stripped of any overt threat, which somehow made it far more terrifying-“you never should’ve thought about refusing in the first place. You do remember your son is still here, don’t you? And I can’t guarantee what happens after that.”
Oscar squeezed his eyes shut. Tears slipped down, one by one, in silence.
“All right… all right,” he said at last, barely above a whisper. “I’ll call.”
The phone was placed in his hand. The screen lit up. Oscar’s fingers trembled as he dialed the number he knew by heart-the number that had long been both his salvation and his curse.
The line rang.
Once.
Twice.
“Who is this?” The voice on the other end finally came through-flat, guarded.
Cale signaled his team. The trace began.
Oscar swallowed hard. “Harold,” he said hoarsely. “It’s me.”
Silence.
Then a short exhale, followed by a faint chuckle. “Oscar?” The voice sounded surprised but not concerned. “ Calling at an hour like this?”
“Sorry to bother you,” Oscar replied quickly, forcing his tone into something familiar. Normal. Unstrained. He even fought through the pain around his mouth. “I just wanted to make sure the latest report on JiangShe reached you.”
A brief pause.
“Oh,” Harold chuckled softly. “That’s what this is about.”
Oscar swallowed. “I haven’t received any follow-up confirmation. I thought… it’d be better to hear it directly from you.’
“You worry too much,” Harold said easily. “Everything’s going according to plan. Even smoother than I expected.”
Oscar closed his eyes for a moment. “So… there are no further complications?”
“Complications?” Harold gave a small laugh. “There’s nothing left that could be called a problem. The board of commissioners is already sided with Bret. Things there are settled. JiangShe is now fully under the right control.”
Oscar nodded, even though Harold couldn’t see him. “And… CEO Callister?”

“That bastard?” Harold snorted. “They’re too busy putting out the fires I started with their own reports.”
Oscar chose his words carefully, afraid of asking the wrong question-or stalling too obviously. One misstep, and Harold would grow suspicious. And then Cale’s objective-pinpointing Harold’s exact location-might fail. “I heard… there’s been some special attention from outside parties.”
“The prosecution?” Harold cut in calmly. “Of course.”
Oscar held his breath. “So… it’s true?”
“The files are ready,” Harold replied lightly, as if discussing the weather. “Audits, manipulation charges, money trails. Everything’s neat. We’re just waiting for the right moment.”
Oscar’s gaze flicked to Daven. He stood not far from Chris, clearly listening in on the conversation with Harold. ” What’s going to happen to him?” Oscar asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t care,” Harold replied without emotion. “He might end up facing it all on his own. That’s the beauty of this game-when everyone’s eyes are on him, no one notices who’s really deciding when the game ends.”
Oscar fell silent for a few seconds before asking carefully, “Do I… need to prepare anything else?”
On the other end, Harold let out a short laugh-this time, unmistakably satisfied. “Just be ready to meet Max at the harbor. You’d better erase your tracks quickly,” he said. “For now, you don’t need to do anything.”
Oscar frowned. “No follow-up reports? No additional documents?”
“No,” Harold answered. “I already have everything I need. JiangShe is just the beginning. The rest will collapse on its own.”
Oscar nodded slowly. “I understand.”
“Good,” Harold said. “Oh, and Oscar-”
“Yes?”
Harold’s tone turned cold. “After this, it’s best if we don’t communicate too often.”
Oscar froze. “What do you mean?”
“Traces,” Harold replied curtly. “I don’t want any unnecessary connections. You understand, don’t you?”
Oscar forced himself to stay calm. “Of course. I understand.”
“Consider it this way,” Harold continued casually, “your role has been completed-very successfully.”
Oscar swallowed. “All right.”
“I have to go,” Harold said. “There’s a small celebration waiting for me. Good night, Oscar.”
