Find me in your labyrinth (Stella and Jonathan) novel Chapter 2897

Eugene’s voice was weak. “I felt much better when I woke up this morning. I’m still a little dizzy, but it’s not a big deal.”

Sylvia’s tone grew serious. “I just got a call from the police. They said the person who hit you lost control because he was drunk, but I have a feeling it isn’t that simple. You need to be careful and watch out for yourself.”

Eugene was silent for a moment before replying, “Okay, I understand. Thank you, Sylvia. And thank you for yesterday—thank you for bringing me to the hospital. The nurse told me you handled all the paperwork.”

Sylvia smiled lightly. “You’ve helped me before too. We’re friends, so there’s no need to keep track of who owes whom.”

Eugene hesitated, then asked, “After my mom arrived yesterday, she didn’t give you a hard time, did she?”

“No, she didn’t.”

“That’s good.”

“Just focus on recovering. Don’t overthink anything else.”

“I will.”

No sooner had Eugene hung up than Evelyn walked in, carrying a bouquet of fresh flowers. “Mr. Winters, how are you feeling?”

Eugene’s personal assistant stood up and tactfully left the room.

“I’ll just put these here.” Evelyn set the flowers on the table.

Eugene’s tone was distant. “You shouldn’t have, Evelyn.”

Evelyn’s smile faltered. “Mr. Winters, can we talk?”

“Of course. I actually wanted to clear things up with you as well,” Eugene replied.

Evelyn took a deep breath and sat in the chair beside his bed, her delicate face sincere. “Mrs. Winters has always tried to match us up. I could tell you weren’t interested, so I never took it seriously. That night… it wasn’t just your fault. I was drunk too. I have to take responsibility as well.”

Tears welled in Evelyn’s eyes as she looked down. “You still have feelings for Sylvia, don’t you? She’s with Gabriel Carnes now.”

Eugene’s voice was somber. “Even if I can’t be with Sylvia, I can’t be with you. Marriage is a lifelong commitment, a responsibility. It shouldn’t be used to make up for past mistakes. That would just make things worse. If we got together like this, we’d never be happy.”

What he wanted was a home built on love and warmth between husband and wife.

Evelyn looked at him through her tears. “But I like you. We could be happy together.”

Eugene’s gaze was cold. “I can’t love you.”

Evelyn felt a chill in her heart. With tears in her eyes, she forced a bitter smile. “What is it about me that’s not as good as Sylvia?”

When she liked Gabriel Carnes, he liked Sylvia. Now that she wanted to be with Eugene, he loved Sylvia too.

Was she really so much less than Sylvia?
