She stood near the entrance, her silhouette looking fragile, her face entirely devoid of color.
People all around were whispering, shooting her bizarre, judgmental stares.
"Governor, the public is currently claiming that you and Ms. Quill are involved in an illicit relationship."
Jude glanced back at Channing, asking cautiously, "The situation is incredibly volatile right now. For the sake of your reputation, should we cancel today's appearance?"
"I can send a discreet team to extract Ms. Quill from the venue."
If the Governor actually showed up, how on earth was he supposed to face her?
The moment their connection was exposed, the humiliating reality that the Governor had spent years playing the role of her lapdog would be broadcast to the world.
It would be a devastating, potentially fatal blow to his career. Zachary would probably wake up laughing from his sleep.
The absolute best course of action was not to show up at all, and let the two of them resolve the identity issue privately.
Even if Ms. Quill was furious enough to slap him across the face, at least there wouldn't be an audience to witness it.
Channing's lips pulled into a sharp, cold sneer. "Running away at the last minute and leaving her and our child to be crucified by the masses? What kind of man would I be?"
Jude pressed his lips together. He genuinely believed it was the most pragmatic solution for both of them.
"Keep driving straight to the conference center." Channing snapped his laptop shut, his tone leaving absolutely zero room for negotiation. "Coralie needs me."
"Yes, Governor."
Knowing that the Governor was fully prepared to risk everything today, Jude didn't dare voice another ounce of doubt.
—
Soon enough.
The car arrived at the entrance of the conference center. The reporters, tipped off in advance, were already waiting by the doors with their live broadcasts rolling.
Before they could even rush forward, Channing's voice cut through the air. "If you're not afraid of dying, feel free to step closer."
The reporters, who had been armed with a barrage of intrusive questions, instantly froze in terror.
The Governor was a man of his word. If he said he would end them, he would end them.
Sure, Zachary had offered them a massive payout for this, but their lives were vastly more important.
They only dared to hold their cameras from a safe distance, not uttering a single squeak.
Channing ignored them entirely, striding briskly into the venue.
