‘Wanna hang out tonight?’ The message read.
Before I could think of a response, Kye’s hand shot out and he snatched the phone from my fingers, looked at the message.
His jaw tightened and the muscle in his cheek jumped, that dangerous stillness filling him… the one that always came before he snapped.
“Why the hell are you still texting this guy?”
“Give that back,” I snapped, reaching for it.
He didn’t, instead, he set it down on the desk, like he didn’t trust himself not to throw it at the wall. His eyes found mine again… intense, dark and too full of things that I didn’t want to name.
Then he kissed me and it wasn’t gently nor was it soft, it was desperate, like he was trying to remind me of something I was trying to forget. The heat of it rushed through me, melting my anger but it didn’t last up to a minute before I shoved him back, my breath shaking.

“I have something to ask you.” My voice shook, not from the kiss, but from the question burning like acid in my throat.
He straightened, wary. “Okay.”
I took a step back, needing space to breathe. “Were you after revenge when you came to apologize to me and asked me to tutor you?”
His eyes narrowed. “Ava—“
“Just answer.”
He hesitated and his silence told me everything before the words even came and still, I asked the question that had been burning in me since the night my father almost died. “Did you tamper with my father’s car?”
Please. Please, say no. The pause that filled stretched forever, then quietly… almost too quietly, he nodded.
My world blurred around the edges, the floor felt too far under my leg and air wouldn’t reach my lungs.
I wanted to believe I had misheard, that he would say no, that it was someone else and that he would never hurt the people I loved, but the guilt in his eyes was too raw and too real.
I swallowed, my voice breaking. “So it’s true.”
“Ava—“
