KYE
I didn’t expect her words to hit like a blade to the ribs… it was clean, cold and precise.
“You almost killed my dad.”
Ava had walked away before I could even breathe again, before I could tell her that I knew, that I regretted it and that I wished to God, to fate, to anything that I could take that moment back… take everything back. But she was right.
If I hadn’t done that… maybe she wouldn’t look at me with that mix of fear and hatred, maybe she would have me less and maybe, just maybe she would stay. Who was I kidding?
I turned around to follow her, or at least find air because suddenly the hallway felt too narrow to breathe in, but just as I turned, I slammed right into Liam.
His jaw was locked, the muscle in his cheek twitching. Pissed didn’t even begin to cover how he looked and he didn’t give me time to talk before he exploded. Fuck! He overheard us.
“I was honestly going to help you,” he ground out, his voice low enough to feel the vibration in my chest. “Whatever shit you have going on, whatever you needed… yeah, I was going to help. But considering the fact that you’ve tried to mess with my family more times than I can count? You taking a bullet for me…” His eyes swept over me coldly. “That’s one thing out of many. So we’ll call it even.”
“Liam—“
“No.” He stepped forward, close enough that I caught the faint smell of his cologne. “I’m not helping you again. Stay away from my sister. Nobody owes you anything, Kye.”
And he walked off, just like that.
I stood there, stupidly staring at his retreating back, swallowing the bitterness that was coating my tongue. I wanted to call out to him, to tell him that something about Isaac felt wrong, that the guy set off alarms in my gut and that I had a bad feeling that I could shake off.
But Liam didn’t look back and suddenly the hallway felt too empty.
