The lunch meeting stretched on for nearly two hours. Afterward, Andie suggested they move to another location to meet some of the other key people involved in the project.
When they arrived, Thorne once again took a seat next to Charlene.
Perhaps because both Thorne and Andie were treating her with such respect, or because her competence was now well-known in the industry, the other project leaders were also exceedingly polite. The conversation flowed smoothly and pleasantly.
As dusk began to settle, Thorne's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, then shot a look at Charlene before answering. "Minnie, what's wrong?"
Charlene hadn't been paying attention to his call, but her hand paused mid-sip when she heard him say Jasmine's name.
Jasmine was in Thorne's bedroom, which was now in a state of complete disarray from her frantic search. With her eyes red-rimmed, she pressed the phone to her ear and asked, "Where's your and Mom's marriage certificate? I've turned both your rooms upside down and I can't find it! Did you… did you two get a divorce behind my back?!"
Thorne's eyes darkened slightly, but he didn't ask what had brought this on. Instead, he said calmly, "No, we didn't. The certificate is with your mother. If you want to know where it is, why don't you give her a call?"
Jasmine had been genuinely convinced they had divorced without telling her, and her eyes had immediately filled with tears. Hearing Thorne's explanation, she felt a wave of relief. She swiped at her tears and asked, "Really?"
Thorne chuckled softly. "Why would I lie to you? You can ask your mom yourself if you don't believe me."
