Thorne stepped into the elevator and noticed that Coy had pressed only his own floor. Suddenly, Thorne spoke up. “You don’t need to come up.”
Coy paused, caught off guard, but quickly replied, “Yes, sir.”
Only then did he press the button for his own room’s floor.
The next morning.
Thorne emerged from his room clad in a bathrobe, last night’s clothes draped over his arm. He closed the door behind him and headed down the hallway.
Just as he turned the corner, Vesta stepped out of the elevator and spotted him. Her face brightened with a smile, but the moment she glimpsed the lipstick stains on the collar and shoulder of the shirt hanging from his elbow, her smile vanished.
Whatever she’d meant to say died on her lips.
She stood frozen as Thorne’s figure disappeared around the corner, and a moment later, the sound of a door opening and closing echoed from further down the hall.
Still in a daze, Vesta glanced at the room number in front of her.
2508.
But she distinctly remembered Coy telling her that Thorne was staying in 2503.
She pulled out the spare key card she’d just gotten from Coy for Thorne’s room.
2503. She hadn’t remembered wrong.
So why had Thorne come out of 2508?
Vesta pressed her lips together tightly, then pulled out her phone and dialed Coy. “Who’s staying in 2508?”
Coy hesitated, unsure how she’d found out, but answered honestly. “Charlene.”
Just as she suspected.
