Wyatt had been keeping a close eye on the Manning family's affairs. Jeffrey had practically stomped all over Max's bottom line this time, yet Max had tacitly allowed it. That was entirely out of character for his usual ruthless style.
Max didn't deny it. "You could say that."
"Now that you have a family and children, you shouldn't be as aggressive as before," Wyatt advised. "If something were to happen to you, leaving them alone to fend for themselves would be truly pitiful."
Max let his gaze rest on Felicia. He reached out to gently hold the baby's tiny hand, teasing the infant with a tender look in his eyes. The baby giggled happily, kicking its little legs.
Perhaps the heat of his stare was too intense, because Felicia instinctively looked up in his direction. The moment their eyes met, Max offered her a warm smile. Felicia felt her heart skip a beat and quickly lowered her gaze.
Max stood up and approached the stroller, holding his hands out to the baby. "Let me hold you." He lifted the child with surprising ease. His posture was completely relaxed, displaying a practiced comfort. The baby stared at Max with wide, round eyes, showing no fear of strangers. Max couldn't resist lightly pinching the soft cheek. "He's looking more and more like his mother."
"It's good to look like Amber," Wyatt chimed in. "His mother is beautiful."
"Of course a son takes after his mother," Amber added with a smile. "The baby Felicia is carrying will definitely look like her too."
Max glanced at Felicia, his lips curving upward. "That's perfectly fine. His uncle is quite decent looking himself."
Wyatt laughed. "If I ever run into Darin, I'll be sure to pass that exact compliment along to him."
"I can call him for you right now," Max offered smoothly. "You can tell him yourself."
The group spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the mall. Wyatt pushed the stroller, walking alongside Max in the back. Felicia and Amber strolled ahead. Mandy, now a sixth grader, held her mother's hand. The young girl was blooming into a graceful beauty, standing nearly as tall as Amber.
They shopped for clothes, bags, and shoes, and the afternoon slipped away in the blink of an eye.
