Max stepped out of the bathroom and returned to the bedroom to find Felicia leaning against the headboard, engrossed in a book. She had changed into a long-sleeved pajama top, meticulously buttoned all the way up to her throat.

Max let out a slow, heavy breath. Being able to look but forbidden to do anything more was true torture.

Felicia glanced up as he approached the bed. He pulled back the covers, slid in, and immediately pressed himself against her side. The moment he made contact, she felt the unmistakable chill radiating from his skin. It was obvious he had taken a freezing cold shower.

"Don't get so close," she murmured.

Max wrapped his arm securely around her waist, burying his face in the crook of her neck and taking a deep breath of her scent. The desire he had just barely managed to suppress flared back to life. "The doctor said that as long as the pregnancy is stable, sex is perfectly fine. If everything looks good at your next checkup, you owe me some compensation." He had specifically consulted the physician about it.

Felicia gave him an exasperated look. "Why on earth would I need to compensate you?"

"Regular exercise keeps a man healthy," Max replied smoothly. "How else am I supposed to guarantee your future happiness?" His low, gravelly voice vibrated right against her ear, sending a sharp, electric thrill straight to her nerves. Her entire body tensed.

A second later, Max let out a sharp hiss of pain. Felicia had pinched his thigh with impressive force.

He clamped a hand over her mischievous fingers. "What was that for?"

Felicia yanked her hand free and threw off the covers, fully intending to get out of bed.

Max tightened his grip on her waist, effortlessly pulling her back into his embrace. "Where are you going?"

"I'm going to sleep with Anne," she declared.

"Sleep with me," Max demanded softly.
