On the other end of the line, Mrs. Austin’s voice crackled with accusation. “Where were you last night?”
Dylan’s brow furrowed in irritation. Ignoring her question, he shot back, “Did you need something?”
Mrs. Austin took a deep breath, her tone softening as she pressed on. “Were you with Rebecca last night?”
Dylan’s eyes narrowed. “Who told you that?”
The car was silent, and Rebecca, sitting beside him, caught her own name drifting from Mrs. Austin’s voice over the phone. Her ears pricked up instinctively.
Then Mrs. Austin’s words became clear: “Garcia called you last night. It was your wife who answered!”
Dylan’s frown deepened in confusion. “My wife?”
Mrs. Austin snorted. “That’s right, so I’m asking—tell me the truth. Did you spend the night with Rebecca?”
Dylan glanced sideways at Raina, who sat quietly beside him.
Rebecca felt his gaze and stiffened, quickly turning her head to stare out the window, trying to act oblivious.
In that instant, Dylan realized what had happened. It was Raina, not Rebecca, who’d been with him last night. His mother had clearly mixed up the two women.
He hesitated for a moment, then decided not to correct his mother. If she thought he and Rebecca were together, maybe she’d finally stop trying to set him up with Garcia. He’d had more than enough of Mrs. Austin’s meddling.
After a short silence, Dylan spoke slowly, “That’s right. I was with her last night.”
What?
Rebecca’s eyes widened in shock. Was Dylan seriously lying to Mrs. Austin?
Why would he do that?
On the other end, Mrs. Austin nearly choked with outrage, her voice rising. “You—You really got together with her!”
It was just a phone call—she’d answered for him last night, and now the truth was out…
Dylan asked directly, “Did you answer my phone last night?”
She hadn’t expected Dylan to narrow his eyes, scrutinizing her. “You didn’t do it on purpose?”
Rebecca’s eyes flew wide with feigned innocence. “Why would I do that on purpose?”
Of course, she had done it intentionally—to embarrass Garcia. But she couldn’t let Dylan know that.
He let out a short, sardonic laugh and looked away.
He didn’t press further, but Rebecca got the message. Did he think she was scheming? That she’d deliberately said she was his wife just to upset Garcia?
