The Thomson family’s living room was thick with sorrow.
Sunny was sobbing uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face. Ever since Rebecca had announced she was getting married, the entire house had felt as heavy as if they were planning a funeral rather than a wedding.
“Rebecca, are you absolutely sure about this? If you marry Dylan, your whole life might just…” Sunny’s voice broke off, her cheeks wet with fresh tears.
Rebecca met her mother’s gaze, unwavering, and gently squeezed Mrs. Thomson’s hand. “Mom, I know what I’m doing. I’ve thought it through.”
Crystal couldn’t hold back any longer and jumped in, her voice anxious. “But, Rebecca, have you really considered whether you’ll be happy in a marriage like this?”
Rebecca turned to her sister and offered a soft, calm smile. “Happiness isn’t handed to you, Crystal. You have to fight for it. As long as two people truly care for each other, they can make it work.”
Crystal froze, biting her lower lip in frustration.
Damn it. What could she possibly do to stop Rebecca from marrying Dylan?
Sunny wiped her eyes and looked around the room, her voice trembling. “The Austin family has only had one son in every generation for ten generations, and now with Dylan… rumor is, he can’t have kids. Does this mean my daughter’s going to spend her life alone in that marriage?”
Matthew, who was rarely home and out of the loop, frowned in concern. “Wait, Dylan… can’t? In that way?”
Everyone exchanged awkward, complicated looks, followed by a collective, heavy sigh.
Rebecca glanced at her worried family and cleared her throat, trying to break the tension. “Actually, I… I don’t mind.”
If her husband was incapable in that way, it was honestly a relief. They could live together with mutual respect, and she wouldn’t even have to worry about “marital duties.”
Rebecca’s words left everyone stunned. Crystal’s eyes widened in shock. “What are you saying, Rebecca? This is about your whole future happiness!”
Anyone listening would think Crystal was the world’s most devoted sister.
Noah put a comforting arm around him. “No way. As long as I’m here, nobody’s going to lay a finger on you.”
Aiden breathed a sigh of relief and nodded his little head, reassured.
At that moment, Matthew stepped forward, his voice fierce. “If Dylan ever dares lay a hand on those kids, if he’s only after Becky’s looks, I’ll make sure the entire Austin family pays for it.”
Samuel, after a moment of thought, his eyes darkening, declared, “If he treats them badly, I’ll take custody of all four myself. I’ll raise them.”
William protested, “No way. I get three of the kids. I’ll protect Becky’s happiness. If there are no kids holding her back, she can divorce Dylan and find someone who truly deserves her.”
The four boys balled their fists, clearly offended at being called burdens.
All together, the brothers shouted, “We are NOT a burden!”
