Rebecca stepped into Emily’s hospital room, the faint scent of antiseptic hanging in the air.
Emily lay propped up in bed, her head swathed in gauze so that only her eyes were visible.
Rebecca fixed her with a steady, accusing stare. “Why did you send those men to follow me? Was it Crystal who put you up to it?”
Emily shook her head emphatically, her voice trembling. “I have no idea what you're talking about. Don't make things up, Rebecca.”
But Rebecca could hear the uncertainty in her voice. She pressed on, her tone sharper. “The men have already confessed. Are you still going to pretend you had nothing to do with it?”
Emily’s expression flickered with guilt, but she refused to admit anything.
She knew that if she confessed, the consequences would be serious.
“I don’t know who you’re talking about. I’ve never even met those people,” Emily insisted, trying—and failing—to sound calm.
Rebecca let out a cold, humorless laugh. “You really think denying it will make this go away? Are you protecting Crystal? Are you planning to take the fall for her?”
Emily’s heart pounded with fear at Rebecca’s words.
“Rebecca, this is pointless. You have no proof, you can’t just accuse people without evidence.”
After a moment’s silence, she added, “I didn’t send anyone after you. Clearly, you’ve misunderstood something.”
At that, Isabella Cooper—who had been silently watching—strode forward, her patience gone. “First of all, Rebecca had nothing to do with what happened to you. But even if she did, what are you going to do about it? Someone like you deserves exactly what you got. Frankly, you’re lucky you ended up in the hospital—if no one had called an ambulance, you wouldn’t be here to complain.”
Anger flashed in Isabella’s eyes; she couldn’t stand Emily’s shamelessness.
“You—” Emily sputtered, furious, but Isabella cut her off before she could say another word.
“What? You should be grateful someone bothered to save your sorry life! You sent people after Rebecca to hurt her—do you really think your denials fool anyone? Whether you admit it or not, you’re getting exactly what you deserve.”
Isabella’s words came rapid-fire, giving Emily no chance to respond.
Emily’s face flushed red, her eyes burning with rage as she glared at Isabella, jaw clenched in helpless fury.
