The Contract Said No Strings Attached (Charlotte) novel Chapter 239

Fitch made his way to the hospital and tracked down the doctor who had bandaged Evan’s wounds that day.

He tried to ask about Evan’s condition, but the doctor, bound by patient confidentiality, refused to share any information.

Left with no other option, Fitch had to leave the hospital empty-handed.

As he walked out, another idea struck him.

Of course—maybe Great-Uncle Marshall would know how to contact Evan.

So, for several days in a row, Fitch found himself trekking over to Mr. Marshall Ferber’s villa.

This afternoon, he strode into the garden with a broad grin, calling out, “Uncle Marshall, I came to see you!”

Mr. Ferber was sitting in his rocking chair, enjoying the shade. At the sound of Fitch’s enthusiastic greeting, his brow furrowed in suspicion.

He watched Fitch approach, his voice tinged with irritation. “Why are you here again? I’ve known you over twenty years, watched you grow up, and you used to go years without paying me a single visit. Now you’re dropping by every day.”

A mix of curiosity and concern crept into Mr. Ferber’s eyes as he studied Fitch, searching his face for clues.

“Well? What is it you want from me, old man? Just say it and take it,” he said bluntly, unwilling to dance around the subject.

Fitch waved his hands, insisting, “It’s nothing like that, Uncle. I don’t want anything.”

He pulled a bottle of fine whiskey from behind his back and offered it to Mr. Ferber. “Uncle Marshall, I brought you something nice. Let’s share a glass later.”

Fitch hurried to explain, “Uncle, I swear I’m not trying to bother Evan. I just want to send him a little something, that’s all.”

Mr. Ferber gave him an exasperated look. “Don’t think I don’t see through you. You’re just trying to use Evan to get closer to Raina, aren’t you? Forget it. Raina’s not interested in your type, and I don’t want you pestering her anymore.”

“...”

Fitch was speechless for a moment before finally saying, “Uncle, I really do like Evan. I just want to be friends with him, nothing more.”

Mr. Ferber was unmoved. “Save it. You think I don’t know what you’re like? You’re a playboy, always chasing after pretty faces. You say you want to be friends with Evan, but really, you’re just hoping to get to Raina through him. You’ve never taken relationships seriously, and someone like you isn’t right for either Raina or Evan.”

Fitch was left at a loss for words. He knew his past behavior made him hard to trust, but wasn’t Uncle Marshall’s judgment a bit too harsh?
