As a self-proclaimed foodie, Ethan hesitated for a moment, licking his lips. “Alright, but you can’t tell Mom about our little deal.”
Fitch nodded eagerly. “Deal. Uncle promises.”
So Ethan led the way, with Fitch trailing behind.
All along the corridor, Fitch tried to strike up conversations, but Ethan only gave him the bare minimum in response.
“Evan, what kind of snacks do you like? Uncle will buy you some,” Fitch offered hopefully.
Ethan thought for a moment. “I like chocolate. And ice cream.”
Fitch jumped at the chance. “Perfect! I’ll get you chocolate and ice cream later.”
But before they could go any further, they spotted Rebecca and William up ahead.
Ethan immediately ran over and threw himself into Rebecca’s arms. “Mom, I’m back!”
Rebecca looked down at him, a little puzzled. “How did a trip to the restroom turn into this?”
Ethan glanced at Fitch before replying, “I did go, but then I ran into this uncle and we started talking for a bit.”
Rebecca was about to say something when Fitch approached, putting on his most charming smile. “Raina, what a coincidence! I was visiting a friend and didn’t expect to run into Evan here.”
Fitch’s eyes were glued to Rebecca, as if nothing else in the world existed.
William leaned in and whispered in Rebecca’s ear, “Becky, is this… one of your admirers?”
Rebecca fell silent, not responding.
William immediately picked up on her reaction, frowning slightly. “Becky, want me to take care of him for you?”
She shook her head gently. “No, William, it’s fine.”
He’d finally found a chance to get close to Raina, and now it was slipping through his fingers. All he could do was sigh in disappointment.
Just then, Ethan glanced back at him and gave a sly little wink, as if to say, “Maybe next time.”
Fitch instantly understood, a wave of hope lighting his face. He flashed an “okay” sign back at Ethan, eyes full of anticipation.
Rebecca led Ethan out of the hospital and into the car. Once they were settled, she turned to him. “Sweetheart, where did that uncle want to take you?”
Ethan blinked innocently. “Mom, he thought I was Evan. He wanted to buy me treats and was trying to bribe me.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh. “Sweetheart, Mommy doesn’t like that uncle. Next time you see him, stay away, alright?”
Ethan nodded solemnly. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’m not that easy to bribe.”
Rebecca smiled, then asked, “By the way, Ethan, what did you really do just now? Was it really just a bathroom trip?”
