“So, that means there’s nothing going on?”
Fitch immediately relaxed, letting out a quiet sigh of relief.
He still couldn’t quite wrap his head around why Raina’s son looked so much like Dylan, but with Dylan denying it so firmly, even he began to doubt himself.
“Maybe I really am just overthinking this…”
But judging by Dylan’s reaction, there didn’t seem to be any hidden feelings between him and Raina after all. That was even better.
Dylan’s expression remained cold as he said, “So you came all this way just to interrogate me?”
Fitch waved a hand dismissively. “Of course not. I came to tell you—I met Raina’s son today.”
Dylan let out a dry laugh. “And?”
Fitch strolled over to the sofa, sat down, and crossed his legs with a flourish. “I actually think her son’s great. If I manage to win Raina over, I’ll get a ready-made family—buy one, get one free. Feels like I hit the jackpot.”
Dylan snorted again. “And you think her ex-husband’s just fine with that?”
Fitch’s grin grew even wider. “Let me tell you, I only just found out today—Raina and her husband are on the rocks. Odds are, they’re already divorced. Her son’s practically in the market for a new dad.”
Dylan frowned. “Is that so?”
Fitch chuckled. “Would I lie to you? Anyway, I’ve told you everything. I’m off to win Raina’s heart. What you do is your business, not mine.”
With that, Fitch left in high spirits.
That night, after Rebecca had finally coaxed the four little ones to sleep, she tucked the blanket around them and tiptoed back to her own room.
Realization dawned on Aiden. “Oh, I get it now! You guys want to play matchmaker so Dad and Mom end up together, right?”
Evan nodded. “That’s right. Mr. Fitch is just our pawn. And honestly, Mom’s been taking forever to win Dad over. Looks like we’ll have to step in and help her out.”
Noah spoke up, “We need to plan this carefully. Next time we see Mr. Fitch, let’s give him a little encouragement.”
Ethan added, “And if we can make Dad jealous, he’ll start paying more attention to Mom.”
Aiden hesitated, “Isn’t that kind of mean?”
Evan clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Relax, it’s all for the greater good—so Mom and Dad can finally be happy together.”
The more they plotted, the more excited they became, as if they could already see their parents holding hands and smiling together.
