Rebecca actually thought Evan’s words made a lot of sense, so she didn’t interrupt him.
Fitch, on the other hand, felt even more defeated after hearing that.
He clenched his jaw, trying to think of a way to turn things around.
But before he could say anything, Evan continued, cool as ever, “But you know, even though I have a dad, he’s not very attentive. Things between him and my mom aren’t going well, and honestly, he’s a pretty lousy father. I’m actually thinking about helping Mom find someone new.”
The moment Fitch heard this, his spirits soared. He blurted out, “Wait, really? Your parents aren’t getting along? So you’re planning on finding yourself a stepdad?”
Rebecca frowned. “Evan, what on earth are you talking about?”
Evan nodded stubbornly. “It’s true. I want to help Mom find a good man, and maybe get myself a great stepdad. But my mom’s not easy to impress. She won’t settle for just anyone.”
Fitch grinned confidently. “Well, I’m not just anyone.”
He was immediately met with Evan’s skeptical stare, as if Evan were inspecting a product at the store. After a long pause, Evan pursed his lips and said, “Everyone says that about themselves.”
Fitch was momentarily speechless, then quickly retorted, “Listen, kid, don’t underestimate me. I’ve got plenty of charm and skills up my sleeve.”
Evan crossed his arms. “Oh yeah? What kind of charm? Sending flowers and gifts? That’s nothing special.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but wonder—how did Evan know about the flowers and gifts? As far as she remembered, Fitch had only ever sent those to her at the office.
Meanwhile, Fitch jumped in eagerly, “That’s just the beginning! I’ve got way more surprises in store.”
Evan snorted. “Like what? Tell me.”
Fitch thought for a moment. “Well, I could take you and your mom to fun places, treat you to great food—”
Evan rolled his eyes. “That’s your big move? Anybody can do that.”
Fitch was stumped. He stammered, unable to come up with a good answer.
Evan smirked. “See? You don’t even know.”
Fitch managed an awkward laugh. “Hey now, don’t be so hard on me, little man.”
Evan replied seriously, “I’m not being hard on you. I just want to make sure my mom’s in good hands.”
Fitch sighed in defeat. “Alright, alright, Mr. Grown-Up. Why don’t you tell me what else your mom likes?”
Evan thought for a moment. “She likes men who don’t talk too much. You talk way too much.”
At that, Fitch fell silent.
