Evan flashed a mischievous grin. “I owe it all to your teaching, sir. That’s the only reason I’ve improved.”
Mr. Marshall Ferber burst out laughing. “You always know just what to say! But let’s not forget, everyone can see your talent and hard work.”
They stepped into a spacious music room filled with all sorts of instruments. Evan dutifully took his seat at the grand piano, then began to play. Mr. Marshall Ferber listened intently, nodding in time with the music. When Evan finished, he offered a thoughtful critique. “That was excellent—your rhythm and emotion are right on point. Still, there are a few details you can polish up even more.”
Mr. Marshall Ferber moved to the piano and demonstrated some fingerings and techniques himself. Evan watched closely, soaking up every bit of instruction. Afterward, the teacher had Evan sing a few songs. Mr. Marshall Ferber listened with genuine focus, nodding in appreciation throughout.
When they finished, he smiled and said, “You’ve improved a lot again, Evan. A few more years like this and I’ll be out of a job! You’re well on your way to surpassing your teacher, you know.”
He added, “Just remember to pay attention to your breathing when you sing, and try to let your emotions come through a bit more naturally.”
Before they knew it, the sun was sinking low on the horizon. As Rebecca and Evan prepared to leave, Mr. Marshall Ferber walked them to the front door.
“Raina, your son is incredibly gifted,” Mr. Marshall Ferber told Rebecca warmly. “With the right guidance, there’s no limit to what he can accomplish.”
Rebecca smiled gratefully. “Thank you, Mr. Marshall Ferber. Evan’s progress is all thanks to your patience and guidance. I’ll be sure to follow your advice and nurture his talent.”
“Evan, I hope you’ll come back soon. I can’t wait to see how much more you’ll grow,” Mr. Marshall Ferber said.
Evan nodded enthusiastically. “Goodbye, sir! See you next time.”
Walking out of Mr. Marshall Ferber’s house, both Rebecca and Evan felt lighthearted and content.
Rebecca was at a loss for words, turning her head away in embarrassment—though mostly, she was just shocked. She never would have guessed Evan’s teacher had any connection to Fitch.
Fitch, on the other hand, was completely unfazed, even a little smug. “Looks like fate keeps throwing us together. Maybe it’s a sign I should get another shot, huh?”
Rebecca could only stare at him in silent exasperation.
With a grin, Fitch asked, “So, what brings you here?”
Out of respect for Mr. Marshall Ferber, Rebecca softened her tone a little. “I brought my son for his lesson. Mr. Marshall Ferber is his teacher.”
“Your son?”
