Meanwhile, Dylan was still at his office, working late into the night.
Suddenly, his phone rang, breaking the silence. He glanced at the screen and saw the call was from the butler at the old family estate, which made him pause in confusion.
He answered, his voice cold and clipped. “What is it?”
On the other end, the butler’s voice was panicked and breathless. “Sir, the house is haunted!”
Dylan’s expression darkened even further. He let out a sharp, dismissive breath. “What nonsense is this? There’s no such thing as ghosts.”
But the butler wouldn’t be deterred. “Sir, I swear! The house has been in total chaos all day. Miss Garcia was so frightened she ran out, and your mother—she’s hysterical! She’s convinced there’s a ghost…”
Dylan felt a chill run through him, but he still couldn’t quite believe it. “How could something so ridiculous possibly happen?”
The butler’s voice was nearly in tears. “I promise, sir, it’s real! None of us know what to do. Please, come home quickly!”
Dylan’s frown deepened. He took a steadying breath and finally replied, “Understood.” Then he hung up.
Pushing aside his work, Dylan hurried back to the old estate. By the time he arrived, the villa’s lights had already been fixed, and the house no longer looked like a scene out of a nightmare.
In the living room, Mrs. Austin was still in the grip of terror, rambling incoherently. Her eyes darted around the room, hands gesturing wildly as she muttered, “There’s a ghost, I saw it, it was horrible!”
Startled, the doctor wiped the sweat from his brow and tried to calm her. “Mrs. Austin, please, just try to relax. Take some deep breaths.”
But Mrs. Austin wouldn’t be calmed. She shouted, “None of you believe me! The ghost is right there—right there!”
She jabbed her finger wildly at a corner of the room, her eyes wide with terror and stubborn certainty.
Dylan followed her gaze, but all he saw was a lamp.
Mrs. Austin turned to him again, tears streaming down her face. “Dylan, even you don’t believe your own mother? I know what I saw. That ghost was terrifying.”
