Annie walked in and scooped up her daughter. “I’m taking Lizzy out for some fresh air. She needs a change of scenery.”
Conner raised an eyebrow. “That’s new. Usually, you complain that Lizzy’s already had too much ‘fresh air.’”
Annie shot him a look as she headed out. “Well, maybe she’s had enough before, but today’s different.”
After the door closed, Conner gestured at it in disbelief. “Seriously, Annie’s always after me for taking Lizzy out too much.”
Andre glanced over. “Annie’s taking Lizzy to a get-together.”
“With who? She doesn’t even have friends around here,” Conner said.
Mars jumped in, “What are you talking about? Milka’s her friend, isn’t she?”
Conner paused, then his face lit up in realization. “Oh, she’s meeting up with the wives, isn’t she?”
Asher piped up, “Hey, hey, Teddy and I aren’t married, you know!”
Teddy grinned. “Yeah, I’m definitely not. What about you?”
Downstairs, Molly was already waiting in her car. As soon as Annie and Lizzy got in, Mia ditched her own son and nephew and scooped Lizzy up. “Molly, daughters are just the cutest! You should have one. You don’t even want to go back to work—perfect excuse for some maternity leave!”
Molly laughed. “Why don’t you have one, then?”
Mia waved her off. “I haven’t even graduated yet. I don’t have my license.”
Annie settled in, chuckling. “You guys have no idea—having a daughter is a full-time job. Lizzy’s dad takes her out every day—look at her arms and tummy, her skin’s two different shades now! If you spoil your daughter, you worry she’ll turn into a little princess. But set too many rules, and you’re afraid she’ll be too obedient and get pushed around.”
At last, five women and three little ones were all together.
Back in the living room, Milka took it all in. “Wow, money really does make a difference.”
Molly tossed the kids onto the couch. “Out of all of us, Mia’s the one rolling in it.”
Mia grinned. “Says who? Aimee’s got money too.”
“Yeah, but she doesn’t have your freedom. Her husband can freeze her credit cards whenever he wants. Yours? He couldn’t if he tried.”
Mia opened the fridge and spotted some leftover beer. “My husband just fines me instead.”
Molly checked the label on a bottle. “Andre can slap you with a fine for a hundred grand, but doesn’t he always make up for it on holidays? Anyway, this beer’s about to expire. Let’s finish it tonight.”
