Henry wrapped his arms affectionately around his uncle's neck and immediately started tattling. "Cooper, Mom put me on her lap and swatted me on the plane!" He pouted his little lips, looking incredibly pitiful, which instantly broke Cooper's heart.
Cooper glared at the approaching couple. "Slowpoke, are your hands getting itchy again? Swatting my sweetie?"
Mia gave her brother and son a warning look. "Don't push me into making a scene in public."
Henry tightened his grip around Cooper's neck. His mom wasn't joking; she really would discipline him.
Cooper noticed Andre dragging the luggage. "Sis, where's the car? Weren't you supposed to pick me up?"
Mia blinked rapidly. "Uh..." She looked to her husband for help.
Seeing his sister's guilty expression, noting his brother-in-law handling the luggage, and recalling his nephew's complaint about being swatted 'on the plane,' the pieces suddenly clicked together.
Cooper swallowed hard and interrogated his sister. "Where were you off partying?"
"Newtown."
"Did you completely forget I was coming back today?"
"N-no, of course not," Mia stammered. The truth was, she had only remembered when she saw his missed calls right as they landed.
"You sound incredibly unconvincing," Cooper deadpanned.
Mia fell silent.
Holding his nephew, Cooper looked at the busy airport exit. "Other people have family waiting to pick them up. Meanwhile, the people picking me up arrived later than my flight."
If he hadn't been holding the one nephew capable of extinguishing his temper, he and his sister would have absolutely started a brawl right there. His brother-in-law would have had to break it up, and Andre Cedillo would have dominated international headlines the next day.
While waiting for their ride, Andre deliberately stood between the siblings, maintaining a safe distance just in case. They could fight when they got home.
Soon, the driver arrived.
