Everly’s face paled instantly. "Sebastian, is it really necessary to humiliate me like this? I am eager to marry you, yes, but that’s only because I love you. You’ve known for years—ever since the first time I saw you, I fell for you and couldn't pull myself out. Even though you hurt me so deeply back then, I still love you. Can’t you stop breaking my heart? I’m not asking you to treat me the way you treat Lilian; I only ask for a fraction of that tenderness."
"You aren't even worthy of speaking Lilian’s name." Sebastian stared at her with a gaze as sharp as a blade. "To be perfectly honest, you are worthless in my eyes. If it weren't for that old man, your grandfather, you think I’d spare you a single glance? And stop saying you love me; it makes me sick. You know exactly what your reputation is like in Murica without me having to say it. Does a woman like you even know the meaning of love?"
His words left Everly’s face ashen. She knew exactly what he was referring to, and she couldn't deny that she had been surrounded by different men over the years. But to her, those were just dalliances, not love. She only loved the man standing before her. She had never cared much for the rumors before, but hearing them thrown in her face by the man she adored filled her with a sudden, crushing sense of shame.
"Sebastian, about those rumors... I know my past was a bit reckless, but that was just my past. I promise you, from now on, I will devote myself entirely to you. Can’t you just forget what happened before?"
Sebastian let out a cold laugh. "You don't need to explain yourself to me; I don't care. And you don't need to change a thing for my sake, Miss Roberts. Just keep being yourself. Our paths don't align, and I have no right—or interest—in criticizing your private life."
