Derrick looked at the sorrow in Greg’s eyes, his own vision blurring with tears. “You were the one who disowned me. You were th one who kicked me out of Dracovia. You didn’t want me as a son anymore.”
He hadn’t intended to say that, but seeing his father in person made all that buried resentment flare up again.
“Then why did you come back?” Greg asked, his voice thick with pain. The emotion was too much, and he started hacking, his chest heaving with the effort.
Derrick rushed to his side and rubbed his back. “Look at the state of you and you are still trying to get worked up. All these years and you haven’t changed one bit.”
Greg finally caught his breath and shot a dry look at the man beside him. “If you didn’t provoke me, I wouldn’t have anything to be angry about. You are just like you were as a kid. You never were one to back down.”
Derrick’s hand stilled. “You are my father, you know me better than anyone. If I were the type to give up easily, we wouldn’t have spent thirty years apart.”
Greglet out a long, heavy sigh. “You are right. I know exactly who you are. This was my fault. I shouldn’t have pushed you like that. I shouldn’t have ignored what you wanted and tried to force you into that marriage. I am the reason you cut ties and left. It is all on
me.”
Hearing the weariness in his father’s voice, Derrick’s eyes welled up. “It is over now. All of it. I know you were backed into a corner back then. If that woman hadn’t been breathing down your neck, you never would have made that call. It has been so long that the resentment has faded anyway.”
“The truth is, I regretted it the moment I sent you away” Greg said, his voice breaking. “I wanted to find you a thousand times, but i couldn’t swallow my pride. When that car hit me, my only thought was that I would die without ever seeing you again. Thank God I made it. I have a chance to see you, and a chance to finally say I am sorry.”
Derrick looked at his father’s white hair and felt a lump in his throat. “Dad, don’t apologize. I wasn’t perfect either. Let’s just drop it. Your only job right now is to get better. Nothing else matters. Once you are back on your feet, we will have all the time in the world.”
“You are right” Greg choked out. “We still have time.”
While Derrick and Greg were reuniting in the hospital, news of his return had already hit the internet, sending shockwaves through the city’s elite.
The Whitmores were always under a microscope in Kingston. Everyone in high society knew about Sebastian’s father. Derrick had been a legendary figure in his youth, and no one had forgotten the massive scandal he caused when he released that statement cutting ties with his own family.
Now, thirty years later, he was back. The city was buzzing with shock and speculation about why he had finally returned.

Triny sat across from them, looking bored out of her mind. These days, she was practically a prisoner in the house. Her entire life consisted of studying Lilian’s mannerisms and expressions. Every time she tried to go out, Jane stopped her insisting it was too
