“You’re back” Jared said, his voice trembling slightly. He wasn’t even sure how he got the words out, struggling to suppress the surge of emotion hitting him. He had imagined having so much to say to his brother, but now that they were face to face, the words

failed him.

Derrick looked at the man before him, who still carried that same air of integrity. It had been thirty years since he last saw his older brother.

He remembered trailing behind Jared constantly as a kid. Every time he got into a fight, Jared was always the first one there to protect him.

When he finally left Dracovia, Jared was the only one who showed up to see him off. Thinking back on those days, he couldn’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia.

“It was good” Derrick said, a shadow of sadness crossing his face. “Uriel and I are doing well.”

Uriel stepped forward and looked at Jared. “It’s been a long time, Jared.”

Jared looked at the woman standing by his brother’s side. Years ago, he had resented her. He blamed her for Derrick’s refusal to marry Renee and for his decision to cut ties with the family rather than back down. Now, looking back, he realized how selfish he had been. She had never been at fault; the two of them were simply in love.

“It really has been a long time. You were just a girl when I last saw you. I can’t believe how many years have passed. Still, seeing the two of you still so devoted to each other makes all that struggle seem worth it.”

Derrick glanced at his wife and pulled her closer. “We’ve had a good life. And thank you for the blessing you gave us before we left. Back then, you were the only one who truly wanted us to be happy.”

Jared gave a bitter laugh. “Drop it. There’s nothing to thank me for. You’re my brother. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters. Let the past stay in the past. We don’t need to bring it up again.”

He gestured toward the hospital door. “Go on in. Dad is waiting for you. He’s been waiting a long time.”

Derrick looked at the closed door. From the moment he boarded the plane, he had been desperate to see the man inside. But now that he was standing at the threshold, he hesitated. He was afraid Greg wouldn’t want to see him, afraid the old man still hated him, and even more afraid to see just how much his father had aged.

Uriel sensed his nerves and spoke softly. “Go on. Don’t keep him waiting. I’ll stay out here. I’ll come in once you two have had a chance to talk.”

Derrick took a deep breath and pushed the door open.

Greg was leaning against the headboard. His hair was stark white, his face was lined with deep wrinkles, and he looked frail an thin. He was staring out the window with a vacant expression.

His eyes held a mix of regret, grief, and other unreadable emotions. This man was nothing like the father Derrick cemembered. Looking at him felt like looking at a stranger from another lifetime.
