Chapter 684
After a brief hesitation, Theodore said, his tone evasive, “What aunt of Megan’s? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Diana fell silent. She drew a steady breath, as if forcing her emotions back under control. “If you don’t know, then my mother probably does.”
“Diana!”
The line set Theodore off at once. His breathing grew heavy. He sounded as though he wanted to curse her out but did not dare, so he swallowed his anger instead. “Do you have to tear this family apart before you’re satisfied? This is ancient history. Why drag it up now?”
‘So he panicked…’ Over the years, Diana had seen plenty of people grow more furious as they felt more exposed. She had never imagined Theodore would be one of them.
As far as she could remember, his marriage to Florence had been stable. The only thing they ever truly clashed over was Megan.
Like Florence, Diana once believed Theodore favored Megan out of pity for a child who had grown up without parents.
That belief changed last year.
At a dinner party, someone let something slip.
Theodore had once had a first love.
At the time, Diana did not dwell on it. Everyone had a past. Still, to be cautious, she casually asked her assistant to look into it.
That single inquiry uncovered a problem. His first love was Megan’s maternal aunt.
Then Diana recalled something else. When Theodore had brought Megan home, he had also brought a woman to the old estate. She had been strikingly pretty, though her clothes showed clear signs of poverty.
Theodore had explained only that she was Megan’s relative. She stayed for one meal, then he had the driver take her away.
Now, as Diana thought back on it, no warmth touched her expression. “What kind of history makes people this afraid of being exposed? Besides, who wants to dig through your mess? I called for one reason. Were you involved in Sydney’s adoptive parents’ deaths or not?”
“Can you answer one question first?” he asked.
“What?” Diana spat.
“When did you find out?”
This time, Theodore did not deny it. His voice grew more complicated.
He could not understand it. When had the daughter he raised become so unreadable?
Playing games with outsiders was one thing. Doing the same with her own father was another. She held onto his weakness in silence, waiting for the most critical moment, then struck where it hurt most.
All the while, she revealed nothing. If Raymond had found out, that brat would have stormed in the same day and demanded justice for Florence.
Diana did not avoid the question. “Last year.”
“Last year…” Theodore repeated the words under his breath.
Then he laughed, the sound sharp and misplaced. “So you’ve known since last year and stayed quiet all this time, just waiting for the day you could use it against me? Diana, do you even remember I’m your father? Who taught you to be this cold-blooded?”

The accusation cut deep. Anyone else might have broken down in tears under such words from their father.
“Whoever it was, it wasn’t you,” Diana answered in a quiet, steady voice, as though untouched. “After all, the little time you ever had for your own children was spent on Megan. Wasn’t it?”
