HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 523

Chapter 523

Tears slipped down Althea’s cheeks before she even realized it. Normally, she would have rolled her eyes at her husband’s sweet words. But this time, the same longing had been overwhelming her too. There had been nights when she couldn’t stop thinking about how Daven was spending his days inside the prosecutor’s office.

“I missed you too,” she murmured. “I was scared. But seeing you like this… I feel relieved.”

Daven gently stroked her hair. “I’ll be home soon. I promise.”

“I believe you,” Althea replied softly.

Felicia turned her face away, giving them privacy. She quickly wiped the corner of her eye and took a deep breath. Her heart was moved, but she knew they all had to stay strong-for their family.

From behind the door, Grace’s soft laughter could be heard again, mixed with Josh’s voice as he talked about his training. And for a moment, in the middle of a storm that had yet to pass, the warmth of that family stood firm- the very reason they were all holding on.

But unfortunately… a knock on the door shattered the moment.

Daven’s lead attorney stepped inside, his expression serious. “Sorry to interrupt,” he said. “There’s an important development.”

Daven straightened immediately. “What is it?”

“First,” the lawyer said, “we’ve uncovered strong evidence pointing to a major manipulation. And second… the Chief Prosecutor wants to see you right now.”

Althea held her breath. Outside, Josh and Felicia exchanged a glance.

“Right now?” Daven asked.

“What would make the Chief Prosecutor summon me personally?” Daven whispered to his lead attorney. The call itself was unsettling. Why would the head prosecutor handle this matter directly?

“I don’t know,” Richard replied, letting out a long breath. “But one thing is certain,” he continued quietly without looking at him. “Whatever happens after this, don’t say anything until I give you a signal.”

“Is something wrong?” Daven asked.

The corridor leading to the Chief Prosecutor’s office felt quieter than usual. Daven’s footsteps echoed against the marble floor, keeping pace with Richard walking beside him. His attorney’s face was tense, but his eyes remained sharp, calculating.

Richard stopped briefly in front of a large, dark-colored door.

“It’s more than just something being wrong,” he said. “This has gone beyond the line. The prosecutors seem far too confident.”

“As if they already know I’m going to fall?” Daven gave a faint smile. “Impressive prediction,” he added coldly.

“Exactly.” Richard looked at him once more. “I hope you won’t react to anything during the interrogation.”

Daven nodded in understanding.

The door opened.

Inside, the Chief Prosecutor sat behind a large desk. His expression was neutral-formal, unreadable. But what immediately put Daven on alert wasn’t the man’s face.

It was the distant noise from outside the building-faint, yet unmistakable-even from inside the room.

“Please, have a seat, Mr. Callister,” the Chief Prosecutor said.

Daven sat down. Richard took a position beside him.

“This summons is being made due to public pressure,” the man continued, “as well as recent developments in the investigation.”

Richard cut in immediately. “Public pressure that has been deliberately manufactured?”

“I’m not here to discuss your concerns, Counselor,” the Chief Prosecutor replied with a thin smile. “We will be bringing Mr. Callister before the media.”

Daven turned sharply toward him. “Without prior notice?”

“This is for the sake of transparency,” the man answered shortly.

Richard rose at once. “How is this even possible?” he demanded, trying to prevent the Chief Prosecutor from overstepping his authority. “You’re aware of the legal boundaries here, aren’t you?”

“When the pressure becomes overwhelming and the public demands a statement,” the Chief Prosecutor replied calmly, “how can we refuse? The case involving Mr. Daven is not a minor one. There are many parties who claim to have suffered losses, and the matter concerns public interest.”

Richard let out a frustrated growl. “My client will not make any statement without full legal representation.”

The Chief Prosecutor looked at him for a moment before nodding. “Very well. Let’s proceed.”

The moment the main doors of the prosecutor’s office opened, a wave of shouting and noise crashed toward them. Camera flashes exploded in blinding bursts. Microphones were thrust forward from every direction. Daven’s name was called again-some voices sharp with open accusation. 1

“Mr. Callister! Do you admit to embezzling company funds?”

“Is it true you bribed officials to cover up financial reports?”

“Did Bret Frederick act under your orders?”

The questions overlapped, leaving no space to respond-growing louder, more aggressive, more suffocating. Camera flashes fired nonstop, creating a harsh glare and a heat that made the air feel heavy and tight.

Daven stood still. His face remained calm, though his jaw had tightened. He could feel anger rising slowly in his chest, but he forced it down. Richard stood slightly in front of him, giving a subtle signal for him to remain silent.
