Chapter 475
“Give my love to the kids,” Daven said, gently stroking Althea’s hair. From the moment she arrived, he’d been looking at her with quiet reluctance-as if he wanted nothing more than to keep her here a little longer, but…
“If you keep looking at me like that,” Althea said softly, “it’ll be hard for me to leave.”
Daven gave a sad smile. “It really is.” He pulled her into a tight embrace, and Althea returned it just as firmly.
Not long after, the door opened. The lawyer who had accompanied Althea to see Daven was already waiting outside. He bowed politely before speaking. “Mrs. Althea, visiting hours are over.
>>
Althea let out a soft breath. “All right. Thank you.” She turned back to Daven. “I have to go.”
Daven closed his eyes briefly, then nodded. “Yes. Go home. The kids must be waiting-and worrying about you.”
Althea nodded, though her eyes clearly held back a heavy reluctance. Even taking a single step toward the door felt impossibly hard. But staying too long could create new problems for Daven. And he was right.
The children were waiting. And worried.
“Then I’ll go,” she said at last. “And don’t stay here too long, Daven.”
“I promise,” Daven replied without hesitation. “I’ll finish this as quickly as I can.”
The promise carried firm resolve and confidence. Althea was glad to hear it-at least Daven didn’t look as tense or burdened as he had when she first arrived. Coming to see him had been the right decision.
The door closed softly behind Althea.
Daven remained standing for several seconds, unmoving, his eyes fixed on the frosted glass door that separated him from the prosecutor’s corridor. He knew Althea hadn’t left with an easy heart. The way she’d looked back again and again before the door shut said everything.
He let out a long breath and turned toward the small table. Althea had arrived with two lawyers-one of them had escorted her home. The other was still here, waiting to speak with him.
Daven focused on the files laid out in front of him-reports he needed to review, matters his client needed to
know.
“What do you have for me?” Daven asked evenly.
The lawyer nodded. “There have been developments since you’ve been here. All physical Callister Group files have officially been seized. But don’t worry-the central servers are secure. Your team informed Mr. Arsen, and he’s ensured everything is safe. We’ve also filed a procedural objection, but it was denied on the grounds of investigative urgency.”
“A classic excuse,” Daven muttered.
“They’re trying to buy time,” the lawyer continued. “For this entire week, they’ll keep pressing you with questions designed to wear you down. They’re not overtly aggressive, but when the pressure is constant and relentless, it amounts to the same thing,”
Daven leaned back. “What about the media coverage?”

“According to Mr. Richard’s monitoring, things are only getting hotter,” the lawyer said. “Your name keeps topping the headlines. It looks like every outlet is competing to keep you in the spotlight.”
Daven let out a long breath. “Did Arsen say anything about dialing it down?”
“No, sir. But there’s a closed-door meeting scheduled tomorrow between Mr. Arsen and Mr. Richard.”
Daven nodded in understanding. Whatever Arsen was doing, it would be tied to protecting Callister Group. For now, all Daven could do was trust the steps Arsen would take to help pull him out of this crisis.
“What about Chris or Cale?”
The lawyer shook his head. “No updates since you last contacted them.”
Daven nodded slowly. “I’ll call them.”
He picked up the special phone approved for limited communication. Cale’s name appeared on the screen. The call connected almost immediately.
“You still can’t get out?” Cale’s voice came through loud enough that Daven instinctively moved the phone slightly away from his ear. The sound of wind was clearly audible-Cale was outdoors, somewhere exposed to strong gusts.
“It seems they like having me here at the prosecutor’s office,” Daven replied shortly. “What about Harold?”
There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by a sharp curse. “Damn it.
>>
“What happened?” Daven straightened. A sense of unease crept in as soon as he heard Cale’s tone.
“He’s not there,” Cale said at last. “The location matched the tracking point-a building with very few occupants. But when we got there, it was completely empty.”
Daven’s jaw tightened. His hand clenched into a fist, and without realizing it, he slammed it against the table. Damn it.”
“(
“He left before we arrived,” Cale went on, frustration plain in his voice. “There were traces he’d been there, but we lost his trail after that. I’m furious. I think he knew we were coming.”
“Then there was a leak,” Daven said coldly. “I think when Oscar called him, his suspicions were already high.”
“That’s possible,” Cale agreed. “And I don’t like it.”
Daven closed his eyes briefly. He couldn’t stand the thought that the man responsible for so much in his life was still roaming free-while he was stuck here, unable to move anywhere except along the rigid path of procedure.
If he’d known Harold was no longer in that hideout, he would never have turned himself in to the prosecution. They’d trapped him with ease, and now he was paying the price.
“Don’t stop,” Daven said firmly. “Sweep the areas around the harbor. Check both land and sea routes. He can’t just vanish.”
