“I’m busy,” Eli interrupted as she adjusted her backpack.

“Just for a moment,” David continued trying to stop Eli from leaving. “Really, just for a moment. Okay? At Avery Café? You don’t mind, right?”

Eli knew that several students had begun to notice them. If she refused in a place like this, the conversation would only become another spectacle for the people who happened to pass by.

She finally let out a soft sigh. “All right. But I don’t want us to go to that café.”

Eli knew Avery Café was not far from where she was now, but the café was more often used by couples to spend time together between their studies.

Why would she go there with David? Were they a couple? No. Eli did not want that.

At Eli’s refusal, David could only sigh softly. But then he nodded. “No problem.”

Eli then pointed toward the cafeteria. “We’ll talk there. I’m hungry, and the cafeteria is better than Avery Café.”

David was slightly surprised to hear her reason, but then he smiled faintly. “In that case, let’s go.”

As soon as they arrived at the cafeteria, David offered her food several times. “What do you want to eat? I can order it for you.”

Eli looked at the menu for a moment. “Just a burger and fries. Soda too.”

“That’s all?”

“Yes.”

David still looked like he wanted to offer her something else. “Do you want dessert? Or maybe—”

Eli immediately shook her head. “No need.”

Whether because he felt guilty or because he really wanted to do something for Eli, David kept trying to make sure that nothing was missing. But Eli only accepted what she actually wanted.

She did not need any special treatment from David, especially after everything that had happened.

After their food arrived, the two of them fell silent for a moment. David looked like he wanted to start a conversation several times, but kept changing his mind until he finally chose to begin with something easier.

“How is Josh?”

Eli knew the question was only small talk. But she still answered politely. “His wrist is sprained. The doctor said he has to stop playing basketball for about a month.”

David nodded. “That’s quite a long time.”

“Yeah.” Eli picked up a fry. “But he’s fine.”

The conversation stopped again. David stared at the food in front of him before finally taking a deep breath.
