Natalie was standing not far from them. Her eyes were already filled with tears, and her expression looked so hurt as though she had just witnessed something that had broken her heart. She walked toward them hurriedly, but stopped when she realized Eli was there too.

“David...” Her voice trembled. “Why are you doing this to me?”

David did not answer.

Natalie stared at him for a few seconds, then her tears fell. “I’ve done everything you asked. I always tried to be by your side. But now you won’t even listen to me.”

Natalie fell silent.

David looked at her without saying a word. Usually, he might have immediately approached Natalie and comforted her. But this time, he simply sat there in silence, as if waiting for Natalie to explain something.

That only made Natalie even more nervous.

“I just want to know what I did wrong,” she finally said, trying to return to a gentle tone. “What did Eli do that made you treat me like this?”

Eli almost let out a small laugh when she heard that, but she held it back. She did not want to get involved in the same game for the second time.

David remained silent.

His gaze shifted from Natalie to Eli, then back to Natalie. In his mind, the conversation he had overheard yesterday came back to him. For the first time, seeing Natalie cry did not immediately make him feel that he had to defend her. A part of him instead wanted to know what she was actually hiding.

“Why are you asking Eli?” David finally said.

Natalie was stunned.

“I’m the one talking to you.”

The atmosphere around them suddenly became quieter.

Natalie stared at David as if she could not believe his answer. All this time, she had always known how to make David take her side. But this time, the man was standing between her and Eli without immediately defending her.
