“This... is my room?”
Her mind still felt hazy. She tried to remember what had happened the night before. The party. The game. The alcohol. David. Then everything began replaying in her memory one by one. David’s gaze every time she lost. Natalie’s behavior, which she felt was unusual. The questions from the many people there about her boyfriend.
And herself saying that her boyfriend was the handsome captain of the basketball team.
Eli covered her face with both hands. “Oh, God.”
Embarrassment immediately overwhelmed her. She could even imagine how everyone had looked at her when she said that. Worse, she had no idea what happened afterward. Her memory only stopped when her head had begun to feel heavier and her body had lost its balance.
She did not know how she could have drunk so much. She was not used to consuming alcohol. Yet last night, it seemed as though everything in her mind was too heavy to think about, until she chose to keep drinking just to hold back her own feelings.
And now, she did not know who had brought her home.
A sense of guilt slowly crept into her chest. Not only because she had caused herself to lose control, but also because she knew her family must have been worried if they found out about her condition the night before.
The bedroom door then opened.
Althea entered carrying a bowl of warm porridge and a glass of milk.
The moment she saw the woman, Eli immediately fell silent. A sense of relief and embarrassment came at the same time. She did not know which one she should feel first. Althea should not have had to see her in a state like this.
“Mrs. Althea...”
Althea smiled faintly. “You’re awake?”
“Just now,” Eli replied softly.
She looked at the bowl in the woman’s hands. Her chest felt even tighter. That simple act of concern only made her guilt grow stronger. Althea did not scold her. She did not ask anything in a raised voice. The woman had even brought her warm food just as she usually did.
“Why am I here?”
Althea walked closer and placed the porridge and milk on the small table beside the bed. “Josh brought you home last night.”
Eli was startled. “Josh?”
Althea nodded. “He said you looked very tired.”
Eli lowered her face. She could not remember anything except the last time she drank alcohol because she had lost the game. How could Josh have been there? Shouldn’t Josh have gone home several hours ago?
