“If so, I want to see her,” Eli said excitedly.
“Finish your breakfast first.” Althea smiled faintly.
“Of course.” Eli immediately picked up the bowl of porridge that Althea had placed on the nightstand earlier. She slowly spooned the porridge into her mouth while occasionally praising Althea’s cooking. Ever since Eli had first set foot in this house, the food prepared by the woman sitting beside her had always been the best.
Not long after, Althea left Eli’s room, giving the girl some space to freshen up. Time continued to pass, and the sunlight coming through the gaps in the windows grew brighter, a sign that the day was getting later.
Eli took a deep breath before finally coming downstairs. Her steps still felt slightly heavy, not because her head had not fully recovered, but because of the guilt that had been weighing on her mind.
She looked around several times. The house was much quieter than usual. As soon as she reached the sitting room, she immediately saw Naomi already sitting there while reading something on her phone. Every now and then, the woman’s light laughter could be heard, making it obvious that she was thoroughly enjoying her leisure time.
Naomi, hearing the footsteps, immediately looked up. The moment she saw Eli, she put her phone away.
“Eli, come here.”
Her tone sounded completely normal, but it was enough to make Eli lower her head before walking closer. Somehow, being in front of Naomi after what had happened last night made her feel like a little girl who had just done something wrong.
Naomi patted the empty space beside her. “Sit.”
Eli obeyed.
The first few seconds passed in silence. Naomi studied Eli’s still slightly pale face, then let out a soft chuckle.
“You look terrible.”
Eli immediately scrunched up her nose. “Thank you. Such a great compliment for today.”
“I’m serious.” Naomi laughed softly. “You look like someone who just had a fight with the whole world.”
Eli finally smiled as well. For the first time that morning, her body felt a little more relaxed. Their conversation then shifted to simple things. Naomi asked about her studies, her activities on campus, and even complained about several things that had happened while she had been away from the Miller residence.
She said the people in the Devereux family had been extremely overprotective of her, especially after she told them about her pregnancy. Eli laughed several times as she listened to her complaints.
However, that peace did not last long.
Naomi suddenly asked, “Now tell me why you came home drunk last night.”
Eli’s smile immediately disappeared. She lowered her head and played with her fingertips. “You know?”
“Of course. I saw you come home.”
