The caregiver rushed forward, reaching for the baby.
“Don’t you dare!”
Teresa stepped back fast, hugging the baby close to her chest. Her gentle eyes, usually so soft and kind, were burning now with fierce determination. She was on the verge of tears again, but this time, it wasn’t out of fear or helplessness. It was pure anger.
Abriella had already told her everything, right after she heard it from Steve. Teresa faced Jared head-on.
“Mr. Nelson,” she said, her voice steady. “Your oldest son sold my daughter out just to satisfy his own ambition. She’s missing. We don’t even know if she’s alive or dead.” Her voice cracked, but she didn’t back down. “And you, instead of trying to find her, you come here and try to take away the children she nearly died to bring into this world?”
She glared at him. “Is this what the Nelson family stands for?”
“I’m warning you now. As long as I’m still breathing, no one is taking my grandchildren away from me.”
Jared’s face twisted with frustration.
Just then, Cadence walked in from the hallway. “Teresa, take the babies home,” she said quietly. She looked around at the tension in the room, but her own face stayed calm and collected.
Jared’s brow tightened, clearly annoyed that Cadence was stepping in. But Cadence just gave him a cool, measured glance, and he didn’t say another word.
Not wasting any time, Teresa and Lorraine each scooped up a baby and hurried out.
When they were gone, Jared finally spoke, his voice low and heavy. “Those kids will have to come back to the Nelson family eventually.”
Cadence moved to the window and watched the car drive away. Her voice was steady. “That’s something for their parents to decide.”
The commander didn’t hesitate. “Yes, sir. Right away.”
The center jumped into action. Everyone there knew what it meant for James—the legend who had just pulled off the impossible—to use S-level clearance. Something huge had happened.
Only a few hours before, James had wrapped up a brutal two-week mission on the border. He’d led the Dragonscale Special Ops team himself, destroyed three major drug labs, and captured two international drug lords who’d been wanted for years. That operation had cracked open more than a dozen cold cases. Seven heavily armed camps in the jungle were wiped out, and thousands of innocent people who’d been trafficked or forced into labor were finally rescued.
His medal for all of it hadn’t even been awarded yet. He’d just stepped out of the base when the call came that Emmy had gone into labor early. He raced back as fast as he could, but he was still too late.
Now, standing under the massive screen, James looked like a man who’d just crawled out of hell. His hand was clenched tight around a small charm, the one Lorraine had given him at the hospital, the same one Emmy had never let go of. The fabric was damp with sweat, the edges frayed from being held so hard.
Right now, that little charm was the only comfort he had left. But instead of bringing him peace, it felt like a knife twisting deeper and deeper into his chest.
